BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's cross country team opened up its 2016 season Friday night with a victory in the 6K Lehigh Invitational. Lehigh bested the field of five teams with 40 points, led by junior John Tolbert (19:29.9) who finished sixth overall, less than one second ahead of teammate Brian Arita (19:30.6), who placed seventh. Lehigh was the only school in the field to place five runners in the top 15 overall.
Junior Christopher Mascetti was not far behind, crossing the line ninth in 19:31.8. Ryan Grace finished fourth on the team, 13th overall (19:53.3), while freshman Matt Kravitz finished 15th in his first collegiate race in 20:01.1. Classmates Victor Yegon (17th/20:03.1) and Jeffrey Kirshenbaum (18th/20:03.7) rounded out the Brown and White's top seven, while Kyle Leonard (20:04.1) crossed the line in 19th overall.
The Mountain Hawks ran 17 runners total in the race which saw 70 finishers including, sophomore Mitchell Daddario (23rd/20:15.5), senior Jack Curran (24th/20:16.5), junior Joseph Inglis (25th/20:17.7), freshman Rafael Hernandez (29th/20:20.0) and junior David Mugavero (30th/20:20.2).
"The main thing we wanted to see today was them running controlled and as a pack, and I thought they did a good job of keeping that discipline throughout the race," said head coach Todd Etters. "Our freshman did not seem intimidated. They seemed like they were focused and up to the task. For the first meet of the season, I think the team looked very good."
Etters believes the team's approach can help them make strides going forward, especially when they shift to 8K races beginning next weekend.
"John (Tolbert) especially has been itching to be a leader on the team. And I think when you can match your leadership qualities with performances like he did today, then good things are going to happen. With Arita, sophomore year we always see big jumps out of our kids in the program, and Brian's looked great since he got here for preseason, so not a surprise to see him up there. Both of those guys looked controlled and comfortable."
Lehigh will return to action next Saturday, Sept. 10 with the Spiked Shoe Invitational at Penn State.
