Mountain Hawks fall just short in 4-3 loss at defending champ Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh men's tennis team put up a strong fight at defending Patriot League champion Navy Saturday afternoon, but fell 4-3 in a tightly-contested battle. Lehigh won three singles matches, but the doubles point proved to be the difference in the Mountain Hawks' first road match of the spring season. Lehigh falls to 10-3 overall and 1-1 in Patriot League action with the loss, while the Mids improve to 13-7 overall and 1-0 in the league.
The Mids earned 7-6 (3), 6-1 and 6-4 wins in doubles play to take a 1-0 match lead. Navy's Tucker Massie opened singles play with a 7-5, 6-0 win over junior Ethan Bogard at No. 6 singles before senior Jeremy Kochman fell 6-4, 6-4 at the top flight and Navy took a 3-0 match lead.
Lehigh responded to put together a rally as freshman Bryant Born earned a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win at the third flight and junior Colin Nardella followed with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 win at No. 5 singles. Sophomore Jack Petersen then evened the match at 3-3 as he defeated Thomas Pecor 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Navy's Walker Sims then clinched the match for the Mids with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over freshman George Cooper at No. 4 singles.
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Saturday when Lehigh hosts Colgate at 2 p.m.
