BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Colgate earned the doubles point, but the Lehigh men's tennis team won four of six singles matches to rally for a 4-3 win over the Raiders Saturday afternoon at the Ulrich Varsity Courts. The Mountain Hawks improve to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in league action with the win, while Colgate falls to 10-5 overall and 1-2 against Patriot League opponents.
Junior Ethan Bogard clinched the match for Lehigh at No. 6 singles, while freshman George Cooper and sophomore Jack Petersen won both their doubles and singles matches.
"We were pushed to the brink by an extremely well-coached Colgate team that played aggressive tennis," said Howard Talmud '77 Head Coach Wouter Hendrix. "They got our number again in doubles and we then faced an uphill battle being down 0-2. We clawed our way back into it through wins by Cooper, Nardella, and Petersen and were all tied up at 3-3.
"The atmosphere at the Ulrich Courts was electric," continued Hendrix. "At the end of the day Bogard delivered an epic serve and volley, chip and charge performance to get us the win. I couldn't be prouder of our team."
Cooper and Petersen opened doubles play with a 6-0 win at the third flight, but the Raiders rallied to claim the first and second flights and take a 1-0 match lead behind the doubles point.
Colgate moved ahead 2-0 as Noah Rosenblat defeated freshman Bryant Born at the third flight of singles, but Cooper got Lehigh on the board with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. Junior Colin Nardella then evened the match at 2-2 with a 7-6 (5), 6-2 win at the fifth flight. Petersen followed with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to put Lehigh ahead 3-2.
Colgate tied the match at 3-3 thanks as Jacob Daugherty defeated senior Jeremy Kochman 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 at the top flight of singles. Bogard was able to clinch the match for the Mountain Hawks as he gutted out a 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Win Reynolds at No. 6 singles.
