NEW YORK – All four seeded Lehigh wrestlers advanced to the round of 16 and freshman Gordon Wolf upset the No. 13 seed at 174 in a wild match as the Mountain Hawks opened up action at the NCAA Championships Thursday afternoon at Madison Square Garden. Wolf's 10-9 decision over Iowa's Alex Meyer helped give Lehigh a winning overall mark of 5-4 in the first session.

The Mountain Hawks scored six points in the morning session, with four decisions and a major decision to sit in a tie for 12th place after one session.

Wolf used his funky, unconventional style to score the first takedown and frustrate the Hawkeye throughout their bout. The wrestlers traded reversals, two per side, and a late Meyer escape gave Wolf a 6-5 lead after one period. Meyer reversed Wolf for the only points in the second and led 7-6 going into the third. Starting on bottom, Wolf earned a penalty point for locked hands and then reversed to go up 9-7, but Meyer reversed back to tie the match. Late in the final period, Wolf escaped to take a 10-9 lead and held on for the victory. He will next face Navy's Jadaen Bernstein, who upset No. 4 seed Ethan Ramos of North Carolina. The No. 2, 3, 4, 8 and 13 seeds at 174 all lost in the first round.

Sophomore Darian Cruz delivered the lone bonus win of the morning with an 11-3 major decision over Wisconsin's Johnny Jimenez at 125. Cruz scored a takedown and two point near fall to lead 6-0 after one and secured the major decision with a late third period takedown. He will next face No. 10 Connor Schram of Stanford.

At 141, junior Randy Cruz defeated Princeton's Jordan Laster for the fifth time in the last two years by a 3-0 final. The No. 16 seed, Cruz broke a scoreless tie with a third period escape and added a late takedown. He will next face top seed Dean Heil of Oklahoma State.

Senior Nathaniel Brown will have an opportunity to avenge one of his four losses Thursday evening when he faces No. 7 Timothy Dudley of Nebraska. Brown won a scramble for a takedown and two point near fall early and held off Wisconsin's Ryan Christensen 7-4.

No. 8 seed Max Wessell became the fifth Lehigh wrestler to win Thursday afternoon with a 6-3 decision over Hofstra's Mike Hughes at 285. Wessell scored takedowns in the second and third periods and added an escape plus riding time. Next up for Wessell is No. 9 seed Michael Kroells of Minnesota. They split two matches this season, with Wessell winning at the Northeast Duals and Kroells winning in overtime at the Southern Scuffle.

The first Mountain Hawk on the mats Thursday was senior John Bolich. After riding out the second period and escaping to take a 1-0 lead, Bolich gave up a takedown to Shawn Scott of Northern Illinois, and Scott was able to ride Bolich out for the 2-1 win. Bolich now has a consolation pigtail match at 197 and will face No. 11 seed Phil Wellington of Ohio.

Unseeded Lehigh wrestlers went 1-3 against seeded foes on Thursday. While Wolf pulled his upset, senior Mason Beckman (133), junior Laike Gardner (149) and freshman Ryan Preisch (165) all came up short against seeded foes, and will wrestle in the consolations Thursday night.

Top seeded Nahshon Garrett of Cornell proved too strong for Beckman in a 10-3 decision in the matchup of grapplers with five combined All-America medals. Beckman will need to come all the way back from a first round loss for the second straight year if he wants to win a third All-America honor. He will face No. 16 seed Anthony Giraldo of Rutgers Thursday evening.

Gardner trailed No. 12 Geo Martinez of Boise State 3-2 early in the third period but couldn't get any closer as Martinez added two late takedowns to win 8-3. Next up for Gardner is Minnesota's Jake Short.

Preisch dropped a 2-1 tiebreaker decision No. 15 Clark Glass of Oklahoma as Glass avenged a regular season loss at the dual in Norman. Tied 1-1 through eight minutes, Glass rode out the first half of the tiebreaker and then escaped to earn the victory.
The NCAA Championships continue Thursday evening at 7 p.m. from Madison Square Garden with round of 16 matches and first round consolations. Session II will be televised on ESPNU and streamed online via ESPN3 while audio of every Lehigh match will be available for free at Lehighsports.com/watch.
