ORLANDO, Fla. – Offense carried the Lehigh softball team on the final day of the UCF Spring Fling Sunday at the UCF Softball Complex. The Mountain Hawks tallied 12 hits in victories over Indiana State (10-7) and Purdue (8-3) to improve to 10-4 on the season.
Senior Morgan Decker had four doubles and classmate MacKenzie Velasquez and junior Ashley Cole both drove in three runs over the two games.
In its first game of the day, Lehigh scored five runs in the first inning and led 10-1 in the middle of the fifth inning before Indiana State (3-14) scored three in the sixth and then three in the seventh. The Mountain Hawks benefitted from a two-out rally in the first. Sophomore Carolyn Wright delivered a two-run bases-loaded single to center to open the scoring and then Cole followed with her first career home run, a three-run shot to right.
Indiana State got a run back in the bottom of the first on a Brooke Riemenschneid RBI double off freshman Emily Sorem, but Lehigh re-established a five-run cushion when senior Alexis Watanabe scored on a RBI groundout by junior Vicky Lattanzio.
The Mountain Hawks added two runs in the fifth as sophomore Katie Schultz scored on a wild pitch and Velasquez singled home Cole; and in the sixth on a RBI single from Lattanzio and a ground out by freshman Brianna Gerhardt.
The Sycamores refused to go quietly, scoring three runs in the sixth and then three more in the seventh, against Lattanzio. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Sorem came back in and induced three groundouts to end the game.
Riemenschneid went 3-for-4 with four RBIs to lead Indiana State, while Cole went 2-for-4 with the three run home run and Decker went 3-for-3 with three doubles to lead Lehigh.
Sorem allowed one run on two hits in three innings of work to earn the victory, improving to 4-2, while Lattanzio allowed six runs (three earned) on six hits in four innings.
Game two saw Purdue (13-10) jump to a 2-0 lead after three innings before Lehigh answered with six runs in the top of the fourth to take command. Lattanzio was hit by a pitch to open the fourth and moved to third on a double by Schultz. Four consecutive RBI singles from senior Jessica Calvini, Gerhardt, Velasquez and freshman Ashley Quidolit gave Lehigh a 4-2 advantage. A RBI groundout by Watanabe and Decker's fourth double of the day put Lehigh up 6-2.
Two Purdue errors and a RBI fielder's choice from Velasquez extended Lehigh's lead to 8-2.
Heather Knight's second RBI of the game brought Purdue within 8-3 after five innings but junior Christine Campbell would not let the Boilermakers any closer. Campbell allowed at least one baserunner in every inning but finished with a line of three runs (two earned) on six hits to improve to 6-2 on the season. She struck out three, walked four and hit three batters.
Maddie Damon took the loss for Purdue, allowing four runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings. Quidolit, Schultz, Gerhardt and Velasquez all had two hits against the Boilermakers.
The Mountain Hawks will be off Monday and will take on Hartford in a single game Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Clearwater, Fla.
