Sorem hurls four-hit shutout as Lehigh blanks Hartford, 3-0

3/15/2016 5:15:00 PM | Softball

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Freshman Emily Sorem fired a four-hit shutout as the Lehigh softball team overcame a rough day offensively with three runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat Hartford 3-0 Tuesday afternoon. Junior Vicky Lattanzio had the only RBI as the Mountain Hawks capitalized on four Hawk errors and several other miscues to win their third straight game and improve to 11-4 on the season.

Sorem scattered four hits and walked one to earn her first career shutout and improve to 5-2 on the season. She also struck out seven to cap a strong showing in the pitcher's circle.

Offensively, Lehigh was limited to two hits and was kept hitless into the sixth inning, but the Mountain Hawks drew six walks and with the four Hartford errors ended up leaving 10 runners on base.

The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases with one out in the first behind an error and two walks but were unable to score.

A one-out single from sophomore Carolyn Wright in the sixth inning was Lehigh's first of the game but Hartford's Lexi Wilkerson and Sorem matched zeroes through the first six frames.

With one out in the seventh, Lehigh finally pushed a run across on back-to-back errors from Hawk first baseman Bianca Ross, allowing senior MacKenzie Velasquez to score the game's first run. After a walk to senior Alexis Watanabe and a flyout from senior Morgan Decker moved runners to second and third, sophomore Katie Schultz scored on an illegal pitch by Wilkerson to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead.

Lattanzio followed with a RBI infield single to plate Watanabe with Lehigh's third run.

Danielle DeMarco led off the bottom of the seventh win a double and Sorem's lone walk of the day brought the tying run to the plate, but the freshman struck out the final two batters looking to end the game.

Wilkerson finished with a line of three unearned runs on two hits in seven innings. She walked six and struck out two. Hartford falls to 2-17 with the loss.

The Mountain Hawks will next head to Tampa for two games Wednesday at USF Softball Stadium. Lehigh will face Maine at 2:30 p.m. before taking on host USF at 5 p.m.
