Lehigh Finishes Fifth at Patriot League Championships

BOSTON, Mass. – The Lehigh men's track and field team wrapped up action at the Patriot League Championships with a fifth place finish on Sunday afternoon. Trevor Knowles delivered Lehigh's lone individual championship of the weekend on Saturday with his school record performance in the heptathlon, en route to earning First Team All-Patriot League honors. Knowles, along with three other teammates/Lehigh relay teams hit four more ECAC/IC4A qualifying marks on Sunday.
"We had some bright spots and we still have a lot of depth," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We're young and had some really good performances this weekend against some pretty phenomenal competition. We did well and we're young."
Lucas Warning led the way for Lehigh on Sunday, earning a runner-up performance in the shot put with a toss of 17.08 meters to earn eight team points. Warning entered the meet with the longest shot put in the Patriot League during the season and Sunday's performance earned him Second Team All-Patriot League accolades.
Knowles, fresh off his school record heptathlon championship, set a new personal-best in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 4.80 meters, which landed himself in seventh place and qualified for the ECAC/IC4A Championships.
Daniel Reichenbach came one spot shy of landing on the podium in the triple jump, where he finished in fourth place with a leap of 14.08 meters. Fritz Isaac also scored points for Lehigh with his sixth place tally of 13.99 meters.
Over on the track, Ryan Cooney picked up points for the team in the 3,000 meter run, setting a new personal record on his way to an eighth place finish of 8:35.03. Alex Fitzgerald followed right behind in ninth place (8:37.19), along with Patrick Reilly (11th/8:39.60), Sean Burke (12th/8:40.60), and Evan Ward (14th/8:41.96).
John Tolbert, James Chappell, Clay Stabolepszy and Evan Hardy of the men's distance medley relay team surpassed the IC4A qualifying mark with their seventh place finish of 10:13.05.
Christopher Del Rossi led the way with a ninth place finish (50.19) in the 400 meter dash. Emre Soybas turned in the best time of his freshman season (50.92), wining his heat and taking 14th place overall. Tolbert led the way for Lehigh in the mile run, crossing the finish line in 10th place (4:21.66).
The Lehigh trio of James Clements (9th/1:06.15), Stabolepszy (PR-10th/1:06.16) and Tom Troxell (PR-11th/1:06.40) finished in order in the 500 meter dash.
The Mountain Hawks concluded the meet with Troxell, Del Rossi, Clements and Robert Iulo competing in the 4x400 meter relay, scoring four points for their fifth place, ECAC qualifying mark of 3:19.63.
Navy captured its fourth championship in a row and fifth in the last six years, edging out Boston University by 30 points. Army West Point took third place while Bucknell settled in fourth, one spot ahead of fifth place Lehigh.
