BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team came out on top of a tough match against Mount St. Mary's Sunday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks fought for a 4-3 win at the Lewis Tennis Center. Junior Colin Nardella clinched the match at No. 6 singles to help the Mountain Hawks improve to 4-1 on the season with the victory. Mount St. Mary's falls to 1-2 with the loss.
"This was an electric back-and-forth affair in which we lost a close doubles point," said Howard Talmud '77 Head Coach Wouter Hendrix. "The top of our lineup really set the stage for a comeback. In the end, it all came down to Colin Nardella who embraced the moment and played the best match of his career. It was so rewarding to watch him step up and earn the match for his team."
The match was close right from the start as Mount St. Mary's earned a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles before the senior duo of Jeremy Kochman and Ricardo Prince claimed a 6-3 win at the top flight. The Mountaineers then grabbed the doubles point with a close 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to take a 1-0 match lead.
Junior Ethan Bogard earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over Darren Mast at No. 4 singles to tie the match score at 1-1. Kochman earned his second-straight win at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 7-5 victory to put Lehigh ahead 2-1. The Mountaineers' Louis Tonon then defeated freshman Christopher Auteri 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 to even the match once again.
Sophomore Jack Petersen battled for a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win at the second flight before Peter Salomon defeated sophomore Dylan Karchere-Sun 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to put the score at 3-3.
Nardella then earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at the sixth flight in his first action of the season to secure the 4-3 Lehigh victory.
"Kochman is back at his old level after being hurt pretty much all year," said Hendrix. "Petersen had an incredible match against DeSomocurcio and came out on top after clawing his way back into the first set from 1-4 down. Bogard played with surgical precision."
Next up, the Mountain Hawks host Muhlenberg and Kutztown Saturday inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
