Lehigh field hockey seniors reflect on careers
10/26/2016 4:54:00 PM | Field Hockey
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey senior class is a decorated class, which has achieved a great deal of success, on and off the field. These five Mountain Hawks have all played key roles in the program as mainstays in the lineup since they stepped foot on campus, while serving as strong leaders and impressing in the classroom. Collectively, this group has earned multiple All-Patriot League honors over its first three seasons, has posted a perfect 4.0 semester GPA in the classroom and most importantly, has served as strong leaders and role models for the younger student-athletes. This class has embraced new head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer and helped set the tone for the program's continued improvement. Collectively, they own a cumulative GPA of 3.28 and have helped set the standard for success.
Â
With Senior Day set for Sunday, Lehighsports.com caught up with the five members of the senior class.
Â
#2 Gabby Tofig – Forward – Newtown, Pa. – Materials Science and Engineering
Tofig has been a key contributor from day one as a Mountain Hawk, playing in all 18 games as a freshman with 17 starts. That season, she posted 11 points (four goals, three assists), second on the team, before leading the team and finishing sixth in the Patriot League with 17 points as a sophomore (eight goals, one assist) when she was a second team All-League honoree and the team's Athlete of the Year. She added seven points as a junior and owns nine points so far as a senior. Tofig has turned it on as the season has progressed, scoring all four of her goals over the last seven games entering the weekend. A Materials Science and Engineering major, Tofig has earned a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and has garnered the Faculty Athletics Council Award over the course of her career. As a freshman, she was named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad for a fall semester GPA of 3.3 or higher.
Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Field Hockey memory up until this point?Â
GT: My favorite memory was this year when we swept two weekends in a row, and that had not been done in several years. Throughout the course of this season, the team has broken a few records, and as senior, it's a great feeling to know I was there to help with the progression of this team, and I know they will do great things in the future.
Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
GT: Our class is very close; they are my best friends. We work well together and are a funny group. We all bonded well and are always together. I live with Kassidy and Janelle, and it has been fun to not only play with them, but also live with my best friends. Marissa and I have been playing together since we were in seventh grade, and I can say that we have a friendship that feels more like she is part of my family, and I am very grateful for that. Julia is a great person, and she has done such a great job in goal for us over the past four years, and I am lucky to know her.
Â
Describe the feeling going into Senior Day. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
GT: It's a weird feeling going into my final game of the regular season. I've tried not to really think about the emotional part of leaving the team and a sport I've played since I was in seventh grade. It's hard to do though, because the girls on this team are my family, and the coaching staff has been incredibly supportive of me; it will be very hard to leave this group. It's going to be very odd to not go to practice at 4:30 or wake up for lift at 6 a.m. I have been so lucky to be on this team, and it is something I will always look back at as four of the best years of my life.
What will you miss most about Lehigh Field Hockey?
GT: That's easy… the team. I can't imagine what it's going to be like to not see everyone every day. Our team is so close; we never are without each other. And that will be the hardest part for me about leaving LUFH.
What are your postgraduate plans?
GT: I'm not sure yet, but hopefully working in consulting or with intelligence. I'm excited to see what happens.
Â
#12 Marissa Glatt – Forward – Doylestown, Pa. – Marketing
A highly-accomplished student-athlete, Glatt entered the college scene with a bang, leading the Mountain Hawks with 12 goals and 25 points in 2013 as the only freshman in the Patriot League named a unanimous first team All-League honoree. She was also named the team's Athlete of the Year. Glatt went on to record eight points as a junior then six as a junior, when she was named second team All- League. So far this season, Glatt is second on the team with 13 points behind five goals and three assists. She was named the Patriot League's Offensive Player of the Week following a seven-point weekend in wins over Colgate and Towson, which featured three goals and one assist. A Marketing major, Glatt owns a strong cumulative GPA well over 3.0, has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and has earned the Faculty Athletics Council Award on multiple occasions.
Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Field Hockey memory up until this point?Â
MG:Â Some of the best memories I have with LUFH are the games when we were seen as the underdog and ended up pulling out a win. We would celebrate like we won a national championship and it's one of the best feelings in the world. Being able to share those moments with some of my best friends made it that much better. I also always love the Halloween practices where our coaches would let us wear funny costumes and play field hockey in them. It was also fun having a pumpkin carving contest between classes.Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
MG:Â We've been together through winning and losing games, and definitely work well together. We are a super close bunch, and are still really good friends with those who have left the team, but started this journey with us four years ago.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Day. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
MG:Â It's a bittersweet feeling going into Senior Day. Field hockey has been such a big part of my life since elementary school and for my career to come to an end is definitely very sad.Â
Â
What will you miss most about Lehigh Field Hockey?
MG:Â That's easy. I'm going to miss playing the game I love with some of my closest friends. Getting to see them every day at practice is something I always look forward to and it's hard to believe that we are all moving on to other things. The camaraderie, the support, and the feeling of family are what I will miss the most.
What are your postgraduate plans?
MG:Â I plan to work in social media marketing or brand marketing.
Â
#13 Kassidy Green – Midfielder – Emmaus, Pa. – Finance
A local product out of Emmaus, Pennsylvania, Green was one of just three Mountain Hawks to start all 18 games as a freshman, recording two defensive saves. She scored her first-career goal against Colgate as a sophomore, then continued with four points (one goal, two assists) as a junior. Also a team co-captain as a junior, Green scored the overtime game-winner against the Raiders. She has continued her strong impact in all facets as a senior - as a member of the team's Leadership Council and key contributor on the Lehigh defense which has recorded three shutouts, including two vs. Patriot League foes. Green has enjoyed tremendous success in the classroom as a Finance major, owning a cumulative GPA well over 3.0 while earning a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll on multiple occasions. She has also been on the Dean's List in her academic career while earning the Faculty Athletics Council Award as well. Green has earned a spot on the NFHCA National Academic Squad every season as well, for a semester GPA of 3.3 or higher.
Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Field Hockey memory up until this point?Â
KG: I have two favorite memories. One is sweeping two weekends in a row this season. The second was my sophomore year when our 6 a.m. run test got canceled right before spring break because of a wedding expo. It was pretty awesome.
Â
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
KG:Â Our class is filled with a lot of different personalities, but we all mesh really well together. We have become extremely close over the years, and I love every one of them!
Â
Describe the feeling going into Senior Day. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
KG:Â I can't believe my career is almost over. Everyone told me that it'd go by quickly, but I didn't realize how quick it would actually feel. I wish I had more time here, but I'm so excited to see what LUFH does in the future.Â
Â
What will you miss most about Lehigh Field Hockey?
KG: Definitely my teammates! You don't get to pick your teammates, so I'm very thankful that I have really great ones. It will be weird not practicing with them in the spring, but I sure won't miss waking up at 6 a.m.
Â
What are your postgraduate plans?
KG: I'm not exactly sure which direction I want to go, but I most likely want to work in corporate finance. I'm not ruling anything out though!
Â
#18 Janelle High – Midfielder – Stevens, Pa. – Supply Chain Management & Management
A mainstay in the Lehigh lineup, High's impact has gone far beyond simply individual statistics. After appearing in 16 games as a freshman, she has started every game since the start of her sophomore season. High made a pair of defensive saves as a sophomore before tying for the Patriot League lead with four defensive stops as a junior. A versatile player, High has played every position except goalkeeper over her impressive four-year career. She has played a key role in Lehigh's defensive efforts over her four years, which includes three shutouts in a four-game span this season. Owning a strong GPA well over 3.0, High has earned a spot on the Dean's List in her academic career. The Supply Chain Management major has garnered the Faculty Athletics Council Award and the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll on multiple occasions as well.
Â
What's your favorite Lehigh Field Hockey memory up until this point?Â
JH: My favorite LUFH memory was when a Wedding Expo blessed us with a nice surprise. We were supposed to run our dreaded run test, the gauntlet, at 6 a.m. one morning but when we arrived at Rauch Field House the entire track was covered by carpet. Happy no run test!
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
JH:Â The senior class is a very diverse group. We are all very different from one another and recognized this from day one. I think our class got along so well these past four years because we all respected each other and embraced our differences. I would describe our relationship as very mature.Â
Describe the feeling going into Senior Day. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
JH:Â It's hard to believe it's finally MY Senior Day. At this point, it seems surreal. We dedicated four years to this program and it's bitter sweet to see it come to an end. I am proud to have been a part of Lehigh Field Hockey, and sad that it seemed to go by so fast. However, I am ready for the next chapter of my life and excited to see how my experiences as a student-athlete will help me succeed in the future.Â
What will you miss most about Lehigh Field Hockey?
JH: This is a no-brainer... the people! I can't put into words how fortunate I am to have been surrounded by the coolest, most fun and loving group of girls who I will be able to call my friends forever. I love every single one of my teammates and will miss them dearly. So lucky to be able to call my team by best friends and will miss seeing them every day... but I won't miss seeing them for 6 a.m. workouts.
Â
What are your postgraduate plans?
JH:Â I have accepted a position with Carlisle Interconnect Technologies in their Supply Chain Leadership Development Rotation Program.Â
