BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off its first action of the season at Navy Day, the Lehigh rowing team heads to the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston this weekend. The Mountain Hawks have three entries in the race, with the Women's Club Four and Men's Alumni Eight set to row on Saturday at 1:10 and 1:37 p.m., respectively, while the Men's Collegiate Four will race on Sunday at 1:15 p.m.
Â
Entries are determined by a lottery. Lehigh learned on Sept. 5 that it had received those three entries.
Â
"The team was excited that we were even applying to enter," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "After the season and shift in culture of the team, we talked with the alumni and found more support to allow the team to go back this year to compete. It's not just the team that is excited. All of Lehigh Rowing is looking forward to this."
Â
The Head of the Charles began in 1965 and has attracted hundreds of thousands of rowers to the banks of the Charles River. The last time Lehigh has participated in the race was 2013 when it sent an alumni boat to Boston. The Mountain Hawks also opened their 2012-13 season at the Head of the Charles.
Â
The experience competing at such a large-scale event should benefit the team as it continues to develop.
"The team can learn what it means to compete on a larger stage," said Conley. "The Head of the Charles is the largest two-day rowing festival in the world and to be able to watch 2016 Olympic medalist race down the same course on the same days, is awesome. Our athletes will be able to see a new level of racing and high school teams from all over the country will be able to see us as they also will be racing at this event."
Â
The Mountain Hawks are coming off a solid start to their fall schedule at Navy Day, led by the Women's Freshmen Four and Eight, along with the Men's Varsity Four, who all impressed in their first action of the year.
Â
Along with continued improvement and development, which they're always looking for in the fall, the Mountain Hawks have some goals heading into the weekend.
"One of the toughest things to do at the Head of the Charles is to guarantee an entry for 2017," said Conley. "In order to do so, we need to finish in the top half of the event we enter. This means that we need to be on our top game. Our athletes know it won't be easy and the Charles River is known to have rough conditions, so being adaptable is crucial."
Â
Following this weekend, Lehigh will host the Head of the Halloween on Saturday, Oct. 29 on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown, Pa.
