BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh heads to New Jersey for its second of three consecutive games against Ivy League opponents as the Mountain Hawks meet Princeton in a 5 p.m. clash Saturday at Princeton Stadium. The Mountain Hawks opened their home schedule with an impressive 42-21 win over Penn last weekend. A balanced Lehigh offensive attack produced 495 total yards: 245 on the ground and 250 through the air. Junior Nick Shafnisky totaled 345 yards of offense and a career-high five touchdowns.
Â
Princeton dominated Lafayette from start to finish, racking up 573 yards, while limiting the Leopards to just 278 in a commanding 40-7 win in its season-opener last weekend at Fisher Stadium. The Tigers ended their eight-year season-opening losing streak building a 40-0 lead including 23 points in the second quarter. Princeton was picked fourth in the Ivy League poll after a 5-5 season in 2014. Chad Kanoff threw for 256 in his first start at quarterback, while the Tigers gained 308 yards on the ground, led by 116 from Dre Nelson and 93 from DiAndre Atwater. The Princeton defense returns ten starters including four All-Ivy selections led by defensive back Anthony Gaffney and co-captain Matt Arends.
Â
Shafnisky enjoyed one of the best all-around games of his career versus Penn as he accounted for 345 yards of total offense and five total touchdowns in Lehigh's 42-21 victory. Shafnisky threw for 250 yards and tied a career-high with three passing touchdowns, and also rushed for 95 yards and a career high-tying pair of scores. He has completed nearly 69 percent of his passes this season and ranks ninth in the FCS averaging 335.7 yards of total offense per game. Shafnisky has thrown six touchdown passes this season and with three rushing scores has accounted for nine of Lehigh's ten touchdowns so far in 2015.
Â
Junior Brian Githens has emerged as a leader in the secondary for the Mountain Hawks after moving to safety in the offseason. Githens has started all three games at free safety and has picked off a pass in each of Lehigh's last two games. The New Jersey native added a career-high 11 tackles in the win over Penn and was named Patriot League Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts.
Â
Freshman Ed Mish is off to a strong start as Lehigh's kicker, converting all ten of his extra point attempts and going 3-for-3 on field goals, with makes from 24, 27 and 23 yards. Mish converted six extra point attempts against Penn was solid in his kickoffs, as five of his seven boots went for touchbacks. Mish garnered his first career Patriot League Special Teams Player of the Week award for his role in Lehigh's 42-21 win.
Â
Through three weeks of play, Lehigh freshmen tailbacks have had a stranglehold on the Patriot League's Rookie of the Week award. Dominick Bragalone was recognized following each of Lehigh's first two games of 2015. When Bragalone was injured against Penn, classmate Micco Brisker stepped up with the best day of his young Lehigh career. Brisker carried the ball 22 times for 114 yards in Lehigh's 42-21 win. He became the first Lehigh freshman to eclipse the 100-yard rushing mark since Dave Wilson gained 154 in a win over Fordham in 2000.
Â
Success on third downs has been directly related to Lehigh's success on the field through three games this season. The Mountain Hawks have converted 15-of-28 third downs (.536) in their two wins but just 8-of-19 in their loss at James Madison. On the flip side, Lehigh's defense limited Central Connecticut State to just 5-of-14 on third down conversions and held Penn to just 3-of-10. James Madison's high powered offense converted seven of its first eight third downs and finished 7-of-12 in handing Lehigh its lone loss this season.
Â
Lehigh meets Princeton for the 58th time with the Tigers leading the series 39-16-2. The Mountain Hawks have won 12 of the past 15 matchups, including four straight. These two teams met for the first time in 1887. Andy Coen is 5-3 versus Princeton
