Mountain Hawks wrap up tournament play this weekend at Pittsburgh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team heads to Pittsburgh's Panther Invitational this weekend in the Mountain Hawks' final action before league play begins. The Mountain Hawks will face George Washington at 4:30 p.m. Friday before a pair of Saturday matches against host Pitt (12 p.m.) and Bowling Green (4:30 p.m.).
The Mountain Hawks carry a 7-4 record into Pitt and are coming off a 2-1 showing at last weekend's Art Carmichael Invite at Rhode Island. Lehigh opened last weekend's action with a 3-2 win over Sacred Heart before dropping a five-setter against Rhode Island. Lehigh finished the tournament with a straight-set victory over Canisius. Seniors Ana Vrhel and Leah Turner were named to the All-Tournament teams for their efforts in helping the Mountain Hawks claim runner-up status at the tournament.
Lehigh leads the league in kills per set (13.28) and assists per set (12.10) and ranks within the top three of nearly every other statistical measure. The Mountain Hawks are hitting .234 as a team compared to their opponents' average of .210. Turner leads Lehigh with 105 kills and is followed by senior Stephanie Slater (104) and sophomore Whitney Krantz (103). Senior Amy Matula has dished a team-best 273 assists, while junior Mariah Brantley leads the squad with 153 digs. Vrhel leads the team with 51 total blocks to go along with her impressive .380 hitting percentage.
George Washington enters Friday's 4:30 p.m. match with a 7-4 record and the Colonials are 6-1 in their last seven matches. George Washington competed at Navy's Kristen Dickmann Invite last weekend and captured wins over Navy (3-0) and Maryland (3-1) before dropping a 3-1 match to Texas Tech. The Colonials have hit .208 as a team so far this season compared to their opponents' average of .212. Chidima Osuchukwu leads the team with a .347 attack percentage and 182 kills. Jordan Timmer has dished a team-best 495 assists, while Maddy Doyle leads the squad with 180 digs. Friday's match will be the second-ever meeting between Lehigh and George Washington. The Colonials emerged victorious in the only other meeting in 1979.
Pitt is 7-2 so far this season and has only lost matches to top-25 ranked opponents in Nebraska (No. 5) and Michigan (No. 24). The Panthers will take on Bowling Green Friday before facing off against Lehigh at 12 p.m. Saturday. Pitt competed in the Michigan Challenge last weekend and earned wins over South Carolina (3-1) and Western Michigan (3-0) before dropping a four-set match to the host Wolverines. The Panthers have hit .247 as a team so far this season and limited their opponents to a stingy .152 attack percentage. Kadi Kullerkann has paced the Panther offense with 99 kills, while Amanda Orchard has hit .455. Jenna Jacobson leads the squad with 204 assists, while Angela Seman has racked up a team-best 150 digs. Pitt beat Lehigh 3-0 in 2006 in the only other meeting between the two programs.

Jelena Sunjic's 144 kills have paced a Bowling Green attack that hits .193 as a team compared to its opponents' average of .227. Katie Scholten leads the squad with 362 assists, while Kallie Seimet's 134 digs are a team best. Saturday's 4:30 p.m. match will be the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Bowling Green.
Following this weekend's tournament, Lehigh will open Patriot League play against rival Lafayette on Wednesday at 7 p.m. inside Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
