PRINCETON, N.J. – Seven members of the Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams earned All-East distinction at this weekend's ECAC/IC4A Championships held at Princeton. Sophomore Courtney Avery earned the ECAC high jump title while two new school records were set to highlight the weekend.
Avery earned the ECAC high jump championship and set a new Lehigh record with a 1.79 meter leap. She bested her own previous school record of 1.76 meters.
"Courtney had a pretty amazing day," said head coach Matt Utesch. "I think she may have been our first-ever ECAC outdoor champion. She continues to impress me and bumped herself up on the national list, which is super exciting."
Three Mountain Hawks earned All-East status in the heptathlon, led by junior Gabrielle Wardle who finished as the runner-up with 4,747 points. Senior Natalie Bates earned sixth place with 4,421 points, while sophomore Sarah Cassidy grabbed eighth with 4,326 points.
"Having all of our multi girls earn All-East is great," said Utesch. "I couldn't be prouder of them and their accomplishments."
Senior Carly Deskins earned All-East distinction in the javelin after finishing seventh with a mark of 42.57 meters. Sophomore Melody Walthers finished with a heave of 35.62 meters.
Sophomore Katie Hatler finished 17th in the 100 meter hurdle prelims with a time of 14.37 seconds. Senior Victoria Mullane finished 18th in the 800 meter run with a clip of 2:10.90.
"Tori is the poster child for development in our program and I couldn't be prouder of her and her fantastic career," said Utesch. "She has such good character and we'll certainly miss her."
Junior Arielle Weiner represented Lehigh in the 10,000 meter run and finished in 22nd place with a time of 37:57.80.
For the men, freshman Trevor Knowles finished in fifth place in the decathlon with 6,479 points to grab All-East honors.
Junior Sean Burke earned Lehigh's first All-East distinction of the weekend when he finished eighth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 31:04.30. Classmate Daniel Reilly finished with a time of 32:00.88.
Mahalsky finished eighth in the 1,500 meter run prelims with a mark of 3:46.31. The time bested Lehigh's previous school record of 3:46.74 that was set by Stellan Thoren in 1976.
"Mahalsky did not compete in the finals because wanted to use the race as a speed workout and save him for going far at Nationals in the 10K," said Utesch. "I think Ryan definitely would have made All-East if we had him compete, but we felt this was best for preparing him for the NCAA Championship rounds."
Senior Benjamin Beauchamp finished tenth in the hammer throw (56.79m) and 11th in the discus throw (49.24m).
Sophomore Daniel Boardman finished 11th in the long jump with a leap of 6.92 meters. Sophomore Daniel Reichenbach finished with a leap of 13.77 meters in the triple jump.
Next up, athletes who qualify for the NCAA East Regional Championships will compete May 28-30 in Jacksonville, Fla.
