BOSTON – The Lehigh men's track and field team wrapped up the indoor season with a strong showing at the IC4A Championships this weekend at Boston University. Three men earned All-East distinction after finishing in the top eight of their respective events over the three-day meet including senior Ryan Mahalsky who set a new Lehigh record in the 5,000 meter race en route to the event title.
"We expected some good marks this weekend and I'm very happy with the performances," said head coach Matt Utesch. "It's great to be going into the outdoor season with such great performances and some strong efforts we can build off of."
Mahalsky claimed the 5,000 meter run title with a mark of 14:07.82 to earn All-East distinction for a second-straight year. The blistering pace bested the previous Lehigh record of 14:12.68 that was set last season by former standout Tyler Mueller.
"I believe that Ryan is our first-ever IC4A champion on the track, which is a huge deal," said Utesch. "He ran a great race and led wire-to-wire. He continues to represent our program very well and showed how strong of a runner he is."
Senior Benjamin Beauchamp earned second place in the weight throw with a new personal-best heave of 17.30 meters to earn All-East distinction. Sophomore Lucas Warning also recorded a personal record throw in the shot put with a mark of 16.97 meters. The heave was good for fourth place and earned Warning All-East honors.
Freshman Trevor Knowles followed up his Patriot League Championship in the heptathlon with 4,735 points to grab tenth place. Sophomore Daniel Reichenbach took home 11th place in the triple jump with a leap of 14.15 meters.
Seniors Mitchell Biler (2:30.19) and Stephen Keith (2:32.48) finished 14th and 16th, respectively, in the 1,000 meter run. Senior Simon Voorhees finished 22nd in the mile run preliminary round after crossing the finish line in a new personal record time of 4:12.82. Classmate Christopher Watson ran the 800 meter dash in 1:53.84 to finish 23rd in the prelims. Sophomore Christopher Del Rossi finished the 400 meter dash prelims in 50.38.
The team of Del Rossi, Watson and seniors Justin Mahoney and Sebastian Nicewicz finished 12th in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:16.99.
Next up, the Mountain Hawks will open the outdoor season at the Philly Classic on March 21.
