Lehigh falls 5-2 to Navy in league opener Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – In its Patriot League opener, the Lehigh men's tennis team dropped a tough 5-2 match to Navy Saturday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The visiting Midshipmen edged the Mountain Hawks 2-1 to claim the doubles point and Lehigh could only manage two singles victories while attempting a comeback.
The loss drops Lehigh to 9-7 overall, while Navy improves to 15-8 overall and 2-0 in the league.
All three doubles matches were tightly contested and decided by 8-5 scores. Navy opened with a win at No. 2 doubles before freshman Jack Petersen and sophomore Graham Lehman posted a win for Lehigh at the No. 3 flight over Tucker Massie and Aries Wong. The doubles point came down to the top flight where Navy's Thomas Pecor and Austin Jones edged senior Ben Gilman and junior Jeremy Kochman 8-5 to give the Mids a 1-0 lead.
Lehigh battled back early in singles play to take a 2-1 lead. At No. 4 singles, senior Mitchell Petersen posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Pecor to pull the Mountain Hawks even while Kochman defeated Jones 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 2 flight to put Lehigh in front.
Navy evened the match at 2-2 when Blake Daniel won in straight sets over Jack Petersen at No. 3 singles. The Mids reclaimed momentum when Calvin Mark held off Gilman in three sets at the top flight. Gilman rallied from a set down to win the second set, but Mark gave Navy a 3-2 lead with a 6-3 win in the third set.
The Mids clinched the match at No. 5 singles as Walker Sims beat sophomore Ethan Bogard in straight sets. Wong closed the match out winning two tiebreaks to defeat sophomore Tyler Hansen in straight sets.
The Mountain Hawks will play their next four matches on the road, beginning Sunday with a visit to Loyola for a 1 p.m. match.
