Mountain Hawks edged 4-3 by Valparaiso in spring break finale

ORLANDO, Fla. – In the final match of its spring break trip the Lehigh men's tennis team lost the doubles point and could not bounce back to claim the necessary four singles wins as the Mountain Hawks fell 4-3 to Valparaiso Wednesday morning. Lehigh's scheduled afternoon match with Quinnipiac was cancelled due to rain, leaving the Mountain Hawks at 7-5 overall as they head home from spring break.
The doubles point came down to tiebreaks at the bottom two flights but Valparaiso won both tiebreaks to sweep the doubles point. Lehigh's top team of senior Ben Gilman and junior Jeremy Kochman fell 6-2 but the other two matches were tightly contested. The Crusaders claimed the doubles point as Lucas Waak and Garrett Gardner won a tiebreak 8-6 over sophomore Graham Lehman and freshman Jack Petersen at the No. 3 flight. The No. 2 match also went to a tiebreak with sophomore Ethan Bogard and senior Mitchell Petersen falling 7-2 in the tiebreak to Dave Bacalla and Chase Hamilton.
Valparaiso's lead grew to 3-0 with wins at the top two singles flights. Lehigh tried to battle back, starting with Jack Petersen's 6-3, 6-1 win over Kyle Dunn at the No. 3 flight and Tyler Hansen's 6-4, 6-2 win over Michael Savaglio at No. 6 singles.
The Crusaders clinched the match at No. 4 singles as Gardner won 6-2, 6-4 over Mitchell Petersen, while Bogard claimed Lehigh's third point with a ten point tiebreak win at the No. 5 flight.
The Mountain Hawks will return home to face Villanova Wednesday March 18 at 4 p.m.
