
Mountain Hawks close out home stand with 6-1 win over UConn Sunday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team closed out a 2-0 weekend and a successful eight match season-opening home stand with a 6-1 win over Connecticut Sunday at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks swept the doubles matches, winning two of the three flights in tiebreaks and then winning five of six singles matches to improve to 6-2 on the season.
Doubles play began with senior Mitchell Petersen and sophomore Ethan Bogard winning 8-3 over Joshua Palmer and Jonathan Edwards at the No. 2 flight. The matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 flights both required tiebreaks. Lehigh clinched the doubles point at the top flight as senior Ben Gilman and junior Jeremy Kochman won 7-5 over Jacob Spreyer and Christopher Toner to win 8-7. Moments later, freshman Jack Petersen and sophomore Graham Lehman won by the same tiebreak score over Andrew Ginzberg and Zac McEntee at the No. 3 flight.
Jack Petersen extended Lehigh's lead to 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Edwards at the No. 3 singles flight.
UConn's only win came at No. 1 singles as Spreyer posted a 6-3, 6-3 win over Gilman. Mitchell Petersen downed Edwards in straight sets at No. 4 singles before Bogard clinched the match with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ginzberg at the No. 5 flight.
Freshman Dylan Karchere-Sun posted his first varsity singles win, defeating Parker Goldstein 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 6 flight. Kochman moved from his No. 4 spot up to No. 2 and held off Toner in three sets, winning a third set tiebreak 7-4.
The Mountain Hawks will next head to Florida for five matches over three days during spring break. The trip begins with a match at Stetson, March 9 at 2 p.m.
