Trio of three-set wins power Lehigh past Stony Brook 4-3

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team battled through another tight back-and-forth match and the Mountain Hawks won three three-set singles matches to defeat Stony Brook Friday afternoon in the Lewis Tennis Center. The match was tied 3-3 going into No. 6 singles, but sophomore Ethan Bogard rallied from a set down to defeat Brandon Stone and clinch the match for the Mountain Hawks.
The win, Lehigh's third straight, ups the Mountain Hawks' record to 4-1 on the season. Stony Brook falls to 1-2.
The Mountain Hawks claimed the bottom two doubles flights to take an early 1-0 lead in the match. Stony Brook posted a win at No. 1 doubles but Lehigh's No. 3 team of Bogard and senior Mitchell Petersen defeated Stone and Tyler Hoffman 8-2. Lehigh's No. 2 team of senior Ben Gilman and junior Jeremy Kochman improved to 4-0 on the season and clinched the doubles point with an 8-4 win over Raphael Termat and Kenzo Kauffmann.
The visiting Seawolves started fast in singles, taking a 2-1 lead with straight set wins from Hoffman over Mitchell Petersen at No. 3 singles and Alex Felisa over freshman Jack Petersen at the No. 2 flight.
Kochman pulled Lehigh back even with a three set win over Joe Morales at No. 4 singles. Kochman won the first set 6-4 and after dropping the second 3-6 rallied to win the third 6-3.
At No. 5 singles, freshman Dylan Karchere-Sun made his varsity debut but fell 6-3, 6-3 to Kauffmann, putting Stony Brook up 3-2 but Gilman again pulled the Mountain Hawks level, outlasting Termat in a lengthy three-set match, winning a third set tiebreak 8-6.
Bogard dropped his first set to Stone 4-6 but rallied to take the next two sets 6-3, 6-0 to clinch the match for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks will be back on the courts on Saturday when Richmond visits the Lewis Tennis Center for a 1 p.m. match.
