Lehigh suffers first loss as Monmouth rallies past Mountain Hawks 5-2

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Junior Jeremy Kochman was a winner in both doubles and singles but the Lehigh men's tennis team could not maintain momentum after winning the doubles point as the Mountain Hawks fell 5-2 to visiting Monmouth Sunday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Lehigh won the doubles point in a tiebreak at the No. 2 flight but Monmouth won five of six singles matches to deal the Mountain Hawks a split in their opening weekend of competition. Monmouth improves to 2-1.
Monmouth posted a win at the top doubles flight but Lehigh grinded out wins at the bottom two flights to claim the first point of the match. At No. 3 doubles, senior Mitchell Petersen and sophomore Ethan Bogard won 7-5 over Ale Gomez Estrada and Bee Kumthonkittikul. The doubles point came down to a tiebreak at the No. 2 flight and Kochman and senior Ben Gilman won the tiebreak 8-6 over Christian Vieira and Vidit Vaghela to give the Mountain Hawks an early 1-0 lead.
The Hawks pulled even when Przemyslaw Filipek defeated freshman Jack Petersen in straight sets at the No. 2 flight and then went ahead on Victor Pugliese's 7-6, 6-4 win over Gilman.
The matches at the middle two flights both went to three sets. Mitchell Petersen won his first set against Gomez Estrada before the Monmouth player rebounded to take the next two sets for the Hawks' third point. Kochman lost his first set to Vaghela in a tiebreak at No. 4 singles but won the next two sets 6-3 and 6-3 to get Lehigh to two points.
Monmouth put the match away with straight set wins at the bottom two flights with sophomore Colin Nardella and Bogard suffering the losses for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks will host two more matches next weekend at the Lewis Tennis Center. Lehigh will face Drexel Saturday at 2 p.m. and Saint Francis (Pa.) Sunday at 10 a.m.
