BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After two weeks of preparation, the Lehigh women's golf team returns to action this weekend to host the Lehigh Invitational presented by B Braun. The invitational will feature nine teams for a two-day, 36-hole event which will be played Sunday and Monday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
Saucon Valley Country Club, founded in 1920, has grown from 18 holes and a clubhouse to become one of the largest private clubs in North America. It encompasses 800 acres and consists of four courses, including the Weyhill Course, Old Course, Grace Course and Short Course. The Grace Course opened with nine holes in the fall of 1953 with the second nine opened for play in 1958. Named for Eugene Gifford Grace (Lehigh Class of 1899), longtime president and chairman of Bethlehem Steel, the Grace Course measures 6,012 yards from the ladies tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours.
The Lehigh Invitational will be the Mountain Hawks' fourth event this fall. So far, the season is highlighted by a fourth place finish out of 14 teams at the Bucknell Invitational. Lehigh also finished ninth out of 19 teams in the Tignanelli Towson Invitational to open its fall campaign.
In Lehigh's last event, freshmen Aileen Jeong and Raegan Jahn led the Mountain Hawks to an 11th place finish out of 15 teams at the Princeton Invitational. Jeong tied for 31st at 163 while Jahn finished tied for 57th at 167.
A year ago, the Mountain Hawks finished second to Princeton at the Lehigh Invitational. Lehigh finished second in the nine-team field, with team scores of 326-311 for a total of 637. All five Lehigh scoring players shot below 80 including current senior Nicole Feierberg who tied for 11th place overall. Current sophomore Casey Farmer concluded the tournament tied for 18th at 163 (83-80) as an individual.
Princeton will return this year to defend its title along with Hartford, Holy Cross, Monmouth, Niagara, Saint Francis (Pa.), Towson, and Navy.
Lehigh will play with the Tigers and Saint Francis, going off the first tee beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Towson, Monmouth and Hartford will go off the first tee beginning at 10:20 a.m. Holy Cross, Navy and Niagara will go off the tenth tee at 9:30 a.m. and will be followed by three groups of inidviduals. Monday's final round will also begin at 9:30 a.m. with pairings going off both the first and tenth tees based on the team standings.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up their fall schedule next weekend when they travel to Rehoboth Beach, Del. to compete in the Delaware Invitational.
