Â
Lehigh started its 2014 campaign with a pair of close defeats against Saint Joseph's and Saint Francis (Pa.). The Mountain Hawks suffered a tight 2-1 loss to Saint Joseph's at home in their season opener last Friday. They were 15 seconds away from taking a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Saint Joseph's managed to squeak one by sophomore goalkeeper Julia Ward. With that goal, Saint Joseph's snatched the momentum, scoring another goal in the 60th minute to propel the Hawks to victory. Junior Lindsey Schott scored Lehigh's only goal while Ward enjoyed a stellar performance with 13 saves.
Â
Against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday, Lehigh mustered up more offense, but fell to the Red Flash, 5-2. The Mountain Hawks saw themselves in 4-0 deficit, but refused to stop fighting. Their relentless effort led to two goals scored by Schott and sophomore Amanda Granger, but it was a story of too little, too late as Lehigh received its second loss of the year.
Â
The Penn Quakers are aiming to build on an impressive 2013 season. The Quakers finished 13-4 and were runners-up in the Ivy League. Penn will be without two of its top players from last season. Their freshman leading scorer and the Co-Ivy League Rookie of the Year, Jasmine Cole, transferred to Rutgers University after recording a team-high 39 points (18 goals, three assists) with the Quakers. First team All-Ivy League goalkeeper Carly Sokach also departed after recording a 1.97 GAA and .776 save percentage. The Quakers will look to their second and third leading scorers from last season, Emily Corcoran and Elise Tilton, to take control of the offense. Those two combined to score 23 of the team's 57 goals last season. Junior Emily Guthier and freshman Liz Mata will try to fill the large void left by Sokach in goal. Friday will be the Quakers' first game of the year.
Â
Lehigh has historically struggled against Penn with an all-time record of 1-11-1, but the Mountain Hawks lost a hard-fought battle last year, 5-4.
Â
The Monmouth Hawks split their opening weekend with a win against Missouri State and a loss against Lehigh's Patriot League rival Bucknell. The Hawks are led by the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Trish O'Dwyer. A native of Dublin, Ireland, the senior has a resume filled with prestigious awards including receiving All-League every year she has played for Monmouth. Monmouth also features a very talented freshman in Maartje Wicherink; she was named MAAC Rookie of the Week after accumulating three points in two games last weekend. The Hawks looked to improve on a good start to the season after a rough 0-4 start last year.
Â
Lehigh is 7-6 all-time against the Hawks, but lost their last matchup in 2013, 4-2.
Â
Next weekend, Lehigh will return to action with two home games against Cornell on Friday (7 p.m.) and Towson on Sunday (12 p.m.).
