Lehigh field hockey falls at Penn

PHILADELPHIA - Junior Lindsey Schott scored for the third time in as many games to pull Lehigh within 2-1, but Penn responded with seven unanswered goals to defeat the Mountain Hawks 9-1 on a hot and humid Friday afternoon in Philadelphia. Sophomore goalie Julia Ward was sensational at the onset, stopping the Quakers' first eight shots on goal before the ninth attempt snuck through.
Lehigh generated the game's first penalty corner just over one minute into the game. Penn responded with a glittering scoring chance, but Ward made a spectacular stick save off an Elise Tilton shot at 2:56. The Quakers' shots kept coming, but Ward kept making the stops including four saves in 1:20 span until Elizabeth Hitti finally put one in at 21:44.
Penn made it a 2-0 lead, but Schott cut the deficit in half at 29:15. She took a centering pass from junior Erin Ricker and beat Penn goalkeeper Allison Weisenfels low to pull within 2-1. However, the Quakers answered just 31 seconds later to make it 3-1. They went on to score two goals in the first five minutes of the second half and six in total for the 9-1 final.
Final shots were 26-9 in favor of Penn while the Quakers held a slim 7-6 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with 11 saves before being relieved by freshman Katie Morris with 19:04 remaining. Ricker and senior Steph Fratoni each recorded a defensive save.
The Mountain Hawks return home to host Monmouth on Sunday at 1 p.m.
