BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team scored first, but Monmouth responded with three unanswered goals to down the Mountain Hawks 3-1 on a sunny Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Gabby Tofig scored Lehigh's goal while sophomore Julia Ward impressed with 15 saves between the pipes.

"I was happy with the team's effort and I just think if we capitalize on our opportunities a little sooner, we'll be in a good position," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley.

Tofig gave Lehigh the lead just 7:40 into the game as she redirected a hard pass from junior Lindsey Schott past Monmouth goalie Christen Piersanti to make it 1-0.

The Hawks pulled even just over five minutes later as Trish O'Dwyer scored on a direct shot off a penalty corner. Monmouth made it 2-1 right before the half as Meg Donahue corralled a rebound and scored with just 35 seconds left on the first-half clock.

Just over 10 minutes into the second half, it looked like the Mountain Hawks had evened the score as junior Zoey Pacheco made a pass from outside the circle which Tofig thought she tipped into the back of the cage, but the officials ruled there was no tip so the score remained 2-1.

Monmouth added insurance at the 61:49 mark, scoring off a penalty corner for the 3-1 lead, which proved to be the final.

Final shots were 25-15 in favor of Monmouth while the Hawks held a 14-7 edge in penalty corners. Along with Ward's 15 saves, senior Steph Fratoni and junior Taylor Mygatt added defensive stops. A pair of Monmouth goalies combined for 12 saves.

"Julia is extremely quick and I think people don't know that about her," said Eversley. "She will find that ball. She's a wall back there and did a great job today."

The Mountain Hawks return to action with a pair of home games next weekend. Lehigh hosts Cornell on Friday at 7 p.m. before welcoming Towson next Sunday at 1 p.m.

"We've been stressing possession since preseason and it was really nice to see," said Eversley. "We've possessed the ball the majority of games that we've played, which is awesome. I think we just need to capitalize on our opportunities a little bit earlier. We seemed to have Monmouth running around a lot chasing the ball."

The Mountain Hawks return home to host Monmouth on Sunday at 1 p.m.
