Mountain Hawks fall to Cornell
9/12/2014 9:48:00 PM | Field Hockey
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Despite allowing a quick goal, the Lehigh field hockey team hung close until midway through the second half, but Cornell proved too strong in the end as the Big Red topped the Mountain Hawks 6-0 on Friday evening. Lehigh sophomore goalie Julia Ward made four saves, including three in succession in the first half, but it wasn't enough. Â
Â
"Cornell is a great team and they have serious speed," said head coach Stacey Eversley. "I think we did a good job of controlling play in the first half and parts of the second half, but we still need to capitalize on our opportunities. We're possessing the ball for a good amount of time, but we're not finishing."
Â
Lehigh had considerable possession, but was unable to get quality shots off. Junior Lindsey Schott finished with two shots while sophomore Aislinn Bryan had the other.
Â
Cornell scored just one minute into the game as Katy Weeks put a ball towards cage, which Elizabeth Horak finished for her first of two goals. The Mountain Hawks bounced back, allowing a penalty corner goal at 13:39, but holding the Big Red scoreless for the next 30+ minutes bridging the end of the first and beginning of the second halves.
Â
Just over 10 minutes into the second, Horak added her second goal of the evening, which began a string of three goals in 8:06, proving too much for Lehigh to overcome.
Â
Final shots were 19-3 Cornell while the Big Red held an 8-0 edge in penalty corners. After Ward's four saves, freshman Katie Morris came in to make one.
Â
Lehigh returns home in less than 48 hours to host Towson on Sunday at 12 p.m.
