Â
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh will try again for its first victory of 2014 as the Mountain Hawks welcome the Monmouth Hawks to Goodman Stadium Saturday on Community Day. The Mountain Hawks were unable to capitalize on a fast start at Yale last weekend as Lehigh led the Bulldogs 21-0 just over seven minutes in before Yale rallied to win a shootout 54-43. Lehigh's offense had another strong day, gaining over 500 yards while accounting for 36 of Lehigh's 43 points. The Mountain Hawk defense could not capitalize on a strong start as Yale became the third straight Lehigh opponent to gain more than 600 yards of offense.
Â
Monmouth carries a 2-1 record into Saturday's contest. The Hawks opened their season with home wins over Delaware State and Wagn
er before suffering a 30-21 setback at Duquesne last weekend in their first road game of the season. After competing as an independent in each of the last two seasons, Monmouth is in its first season as a football member of the Big South Conference. Monmouth's offense is a veteran group led by a trio of fifth-year seniors in quarterback Brandon Hill, running back Kwabena Asante and wide receiver Neal Sterling. Defensively, the Hawks rank third nationally, allowing just 71 rushing yards per game. John Sieczkowski is the top tackler with 25 stops.
Â
History indicates that when the Mountain Hawks rush for more than 200 yards in a game, they usually win. This year however, Lehigh has lost games while rushing for 287 and 210 yards. Lehigh has eclipsed the 200 yard rushing mark 17 times under Andy Coen and the Mountain Hawks are now 14-3 in those games. Prior to this season, the last time Lehigh rushed for more than 200 yards in a game and lost was Oct. 25, 2008 when the Mountain Hawks ran for 209 in a 35-21 loss at Holy Cross.
Â
While he has received a lot of attention from opposing offenses, sophomore cornerback Brandon Leaks has been a bright spot for Lehigh defensively in 2014. Leaks has intercepted passes in each of Lehigh's last two games, returning his pick against Yale for a 23 yard touchdown, which gave the Mountain Hawks a 21-0 first quarter lead. He leads the Mountain Hawks with five passes defensed this season. Leaks has also been Lehigh's primary kickoff returner, averaging nearly 20 yards per return this season.
Â
College football coaches around the country, including Lehigh's Andy Coen, will join to fight one opponent today – Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. By wearing an arm band with the Coach to Cure MD insignia, coaches will show their support for Coach to Cure MD, the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) charitable project. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed during childhood. Because the Duchenne gene is found on the X-chromosome, it primarily affects boys and occurs across all races and cultures.
Â
Lehigh and Monmouth are meeting for the sixth time, with the Mountain Hawks winning all five previous meetings. The Mountain Hawks and Hawks have squared off in each of the last three seasons with Lehigh winning 27-17 in 2012 at Goodman Stadium and 49-24 in 2011 and 28-25 last year in New Jersey. Lehigh also defeated Monmouth 56-10 in 1999 and topped the Hawks by a 54-26 margin in the 2005 season opener.
Â
Saturday's game kicks off just after 12:30 at Goodman Stadium. Tickets for the game are still available, and may be purchased in one of three ways: by visiting the Lehigh ticket office located in Stabler Arena, by calling (610) 7LU-GAME, or on-line anytime at LehighTickets.com.
Â
Community Day activities at Goodman Stadium Saturday will begin at 11 a.m., including face painting, music, and inflatables presented by All About Fun.
Â
Lehigh will have its bye next weekend and will return to action on October 11 when the Mountain Hawks open up Patriot League play against the Bucknell Bison with game time set for 12:30 p.m. from Goodman Stadium.
