BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team will have one final chance to tune up before Patriot League play begins when the Mountain Hawks welcome Villanova to the Ulrich Sports Complex Tuesday night at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast for free on the Patriot League Network.
Lehigh enters Tuesday's contest with a 4-2 record and is coming off a 1-0 overtime win against Stetson Friday night. After the two teams combined for 34 shots in regulation with no goals, it only took freshman Doyle Tuvesson one shot in overtime to send his team home winners as the Mountain Hawks topped the Hatters and earned their second home win in as many tries. Tuvesson took a feed from junior Jamie Luchini and slotted it just inside the right post to give Lehigh the 1-0 win. Senior keeper Ciaran Nugent posted his 17th career shutout and third clean sheet of the season after making five saves.
Luchini leads Lehigh with three goals so far this season, while Tuvesson follows with two. Junior Austin Decker and senior Ali Famili have also scored goals this season. Nugent, who is tied for 11th in the nation in career shutouts among active Division I players, has made 18 saves so far this season and holds a 1.00 GAA and 78.3 save percentage.
Villanova comes to Bethlehem with a 2-3-1 overall record and is coming off a 1-1 double-overtime draw against Monmouth on Saturday. The Wildcats opened the season with three-straight 1-0 losses, but bounced back with home wins over Saint Peter's and Albany before Saturday's tie. Villanova will be searching for its first road win of the season on Tuesday.
Senior forward Aaron Dennis leads Villanova with two goals and an assist so far this season. Oscar Umar, Max Kroschwitz and John Jlopleh have each tallied a goal apiece for the Wildcats. Sophomore keeper Will Steiner has a save percentage of .815 and has recorded one shutout in his first season as a starter for the Wildcats.
Lehigh will be looking for its first-ever win over the Wildcats Tuesday night. The teams have only met two times in the past as Villanova picked up a 1-0 win in 2013 and the teams played to a 1-1 draw in 1995. The Mountain Hawks controlled the ball for much of last season's meeting, but an unfortunate Lehigh foul led to a good Wildcat penalty kick in the 59th minute, which proved to be all Villanova would need to capture the victory.
Following Tuesday's matchup, Lehigh remains home Saturday to open Patriot League play against No. 14 American at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The contest can be viewed free of charge on the Patriot League Network.
