Two late goals not enough in 5-2 loss to Saint Francis (Pa.)

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Junior Lindsey Schott and sophomore Amanda Granger scored late second-half goals, but it wasn't enough as Saint Francis (Pa.) topped the Mountain Hawks 5-2 on a hot and humid Sunday afternoon. The Red Flash scored just 2:36 into the game and carried that momentum to a 3-0 halftime lead, which proved too much for Lehigh to overcome.
Â
Down 4-0 after Autumn Pellman's third goal of the game at 55:19, Schott responded just 1:39 later, putting home a rebound off a penalty corner. Less than 10 minutes later, Lehigh scored its second straight goal as Granger also finished a rebound to make it 4-2 at the 66:40 mark. Saint Francis added insurance less than a minute later for the 5-2 final.
Â
"I think we started using our passing pattern a bit more and were playing together, so that made it easy to score the goals," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "I think we were playing more relentlessly. We didn't want the ball to come out of the circle. We obviously wanted to score and come back in the game. That was all really good, but it happened a little too late."
Â
After Pellman scored in the third minute, Lehigh responded with a great scoring chance just over one minute later as junior Erin Ricker unleashed a shot off a penalty corner. It looked ticketed for the back of the cage, but Saint Francis' Carissa Makea made a defensive save to keep her team in front.
Â
The Red Flash made the most of the momentum, adding first-half goals at 14:36 and 30:23 (Pellman's second) for the 3-0 halftime advantage.
Â
Final shots were 16-15 in favor of the Mountain Hawks while Saint Francis held a 9-7 edge in penalty corners. Lehigh freshman goalie Katie Morris made her collegiate debut in the second half and played well, making six saves over the final 35 minutes while junior Kat Kneizys added a defensive save. Samantha Zeiders of the Red Flash made eight.
Â
"Katie stepped in and played very well," said Eversley. "She said she was ready and prepared and she saved a lot of goals. That was great."
Â
The Mountain Hawks return to action next Friday when they travel to Penn to face the Quakers at 3 p.m. Lehigh returns home to host Monmouth next Sunday afternoon.
Â
"I think we learned a lot in these first two games," said Eversley. Â "It's important to play together. We're going to keep stressing that in practice and look ahead to Penn."
