BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh volleyball team will begin its 2014 campaign this weekend at the Buffalo Invitational. The Mountain Hawks kick off the season at 12 p.m. Friday against Siena before a 7 p.m. match against host Buffalo. Saturday features a contest against Canisius at 10 a.m. followed by a match versus Ole Miss at 5 p.m. Free live video and live stats will be available for all matches.
The 2014 Mountain Hawks aim to make their fourth-straight Patriot League Tournament appearance and build upon last year's 20-win season. The squad will be led by senior preseason All-Patriot League honoree Jade Van Streepen and classmate Kaylynn Genemaras, as well as junior captain Amy Matula.
Lehigh finished fourth in the league in 2013 and made its third-straight Patriot League Tournament appearance, where the Mountain Hawks fell to eventual champion and NCAA Sweet 16 team American. Lehigh finished the season in the top three of nearly all of the Patriot League's statistical measures. The Mountain Hawks ranked second in assists per set (12.41) and kills per set (13.09), and third in hitting percentage (.202), opponent hitting percentage (.168) and digs per set (15.66).
Siena finished the 2013 season with a 14-14 overall record and a 13-5 conference mark. The Saints were predicted to finish fourth in the MAAC this season and will be led by preseason All-MAAC selection Jacqueline Skeen. Friday's 12 p.m. match will be the first between Lehigh and Siena since 1994.
Buffalo tallied an 18-12 overall record and 6-10 conference clip in 2013. The Bulls are predicted to finish second in the MAC East this season while junior Tahleia Bishop landed on the preseason All-Division squad. Buffalo finished in a tie for seventh place in the MAC in 2013, but the Bulls return three of their top four hitters for the 2014 campaign. Friday's 7 p.m. contest will be the first-ever match between Lehigh and Buffalo.
Canisius wrapped up 2013 with an 11-18 record that included a 9-9 conference mark. The Golden Griffins are projected to finish sixth in the MAAC this season. Canisus is led by senior libero Emily Litwin, who was named second team All-MAAC a season ago, and classmate Olivia Chrzanowski. The Mountain Hawks and Golden Griffins last met in 1998 and Lehigh holds a 3-1 all-time advantage.
Ole Miss finished last season with a 14-17 overall record and 4-14 record in the SEC. The Rebels are projected to finish tenth in the conference this season and will be led by seniors Marie-Pierre Bakima and Rachael Weathersby. The Mountain Hawks and Rebels have met once before, in 1998, when Ole Miss walked took home a 3-1 victory.
Following the Buffalo Invitational, the Mountain Hawks continue non-league play at George Mason's Patriot Invitational next weekend. Lehigh makes its home debut on Sept. 12-13 when the Mountain Hawks host the Crosstown Invitational.
