BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team's streak of five consecutive Patriot League Scholar-Athletes of the Year came to an end but the Mountain Hawks are still well represented on the Academic All-Patriot League team announced Tuesday. Junior Emily Bausher and sophomores Morgan Decker and Alexis Watanabe represent the Mountain Hawks on the 12-player team that recognizes players for their athletic and academic prowess.
The Patriot League softball academic awards are voted on by the league's sports information directors. To be eligible for this honor, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter or key player in his/her sport.
Bausher appears on the team for the second consecutive year while Decker and Watanabe are first time honorees. All three Mountain Hawks have made the Dean's List at Lehigh and are members of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and the NFCA All-Academic Team.
A two-time All-Patriot League selection thus far, Bausher has also been strong in the classroom where she carries a 3.52 GPA in earth and environmental science.
Decker, last year's Patriot League Player and Rookie of the Year, holds a 3.64 GPA majoring in behavioral neuroscience. Last week, she was named to the Capital One Academic All-District II team and will be up for Academic All-America honors later this month.
Watanabe owns the top GPA on the Mountain Hawks, with a 3.80 in molecular biology. A second team All-Patriot League second baseman in 2013, Watanabe posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in her first semester at Lehigh.
Bucknell junior Cydnee Sanders was voted the league's Scholar-Athlete of the Year for softball.
The Mountain Hawks (30-18) will host the three-day tournament beginning Thursday at Kaufman Field. As the top seed, Lehigh will open the tournament against No. 4 seed Army in Thursday's first game with first pitch set for 12:05 p.m.
