BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After slugging three home runs and driving in a team-best eight runs in five games last week, Lehigh sophomore Jessica Calvini was named Patriot League Player of the Week, it was announced Monday. Calvini started all five games in left field and hit safely in four of the five contests as the Mountain Hawks posted a 3-2 record. This is the first Patriot League weekly award of Calvini's career.
Calvini's week began with a 2-for-8 showing in Lehigh's doubleheader sweep at Rider on Wednesday. Her two-run single keyed a five-run first inning in game one as Lehigh went on to a 6-0 victory. In game two, Calvini connected for the third of Lehigh's back-to-back-to-back home runs as the Mountain Hawks took a 4-0 lead and went on to win 10-4.
The Mamaroneck, N.Y. native provided the bulk of the offense for Lehigh in its weekend series against Boston University, going 4-for-9 with two home runs and four runs batted in. Calvini gave Lehigh a 1-0 lead with a first inning RBI single in Saturday's game two loss and homered in the seventh to bring the Mountain Hawks back within 6-4. She also put the Mountain Hawks in front 2-0 in Sunday's series finale with a second inning solo home run and a third inning RBI single.
For the season, Calvini is now hitting .275 with four doubles, four home runs and 16 RBI. She ranks second on the team in home runs and third in doubles and RBI.
Junior pitcher Emily Bausher received honorable mention accolades from the league Monday as she returned to the circle after nearly two weeks off with a complete game one-hit shutout in Saturday's series opener at BU. Bausher tossed five no-hit innings and struck out seven in her first complete game shutout of the season.
The Mountain Hawks won their first three games last week to run their winning streak to 13 before dropping the final two games of their series at Boston University. At the halfway point of Patriot League play, Lehigh is now 17-12 overall and 7-2 in the league. The Mountain Hawks are tied with the Terriers in the loss column but BU has played three fewer games. Bucknell is also in the hunt at 6-3, one game behind Lehigh.
This week, Lehigh will host three non-league games Tuesday and Wednesday before returning to Patriot League play with three critical games at Bucknell next weekend.
On Tuesday, the Mountain Hawks welcome the Marist Red Foxes for a doubleheader. Marist comes in at 9-16 overall. The Red Foxes swept a home doubleheader from Manhattan on Sunday to improve to 3-0 in MAAC play.
Taylor Kuzma is Marist's top hitter with a .367 average and 18 RBI. She is one of three Red Foxes with four home runs on the season. Marist has used a four-person pitching rotation that has combined to post a 4.79 ERA. Janine Lalli leads the way with a 3-3 record and a 2.98 ERA and 24 strikeouts in 47 innings of work.
Lehigh leads the all-time series with Marist 6-4 with the Mountain Hawks sweeping a doubleheader in the most recent meetings in 2009.
The Mountain Hawks will host Fordham in a single game on Wednesday. The defending Atlantic 10 tournament champions are 19-16 on the season and 3-1 in A-10 play. Fordham will play a doubleheader against St. John's Tuesday before its Wednesday trip to Bethlehem. Atlantic 10 player of the week Elise Fortier leads the Rams with a .323 average, eight home runs and 33 RBI. Michele Daubman has thrown the most innings in the circle, going 10-9 with a 2.96 ERA.
Lehigh holds a 17-8 edge in the all-time series versus Fordham and has won four straight, sweeping doubleheaders in 2012 and 2013.
Sophomore Morgan Decker continues to lead Lehigh offensively at .416 with five home runs and 28 RBI. Decker will look to bounce back from a 2-for-11 showing in the three games in Boston. Freshman Christine Campbell leads what has been a balanced Lehigh pitching attack with seven wins and a 2.24 ERA in 68.2 innings. Senior Ashley Quigley leads the staff with 50 strikeouts.
Tuesday's doubleheader begins at 3 p.m. from Kaufman Field, while Wednesday's single game is set for a 3:30 p.m. start. Streaming audio for all three games will be available at Lehighsports.com/showcase(.)
