EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh women's track and field team captured a 107-96 win over rival Lafayette Saturday afternoon at the Leopards' Metzgar Athletic Fields, while the men dropped a slim 102-101 decision to the Leopards. The Mountain Hawk women completed the season sweep of the Lafayette following a victory in the indoor dual meet in February.
"These duals meets help us because they're meets where we need to score points, so different athletes need to step into different events and do just that," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We had a lot of people do that today."
Senior Brooke Astor picked up four individual event victories, highlighted by an ECAC qualifying and new personal best mark of 5.84 in the long jump. The senior sprinted her way to a first place finish in the 100 meter dash (12.20) and 100 meter hurdles (14.35) before picking up another win in the 400 meter hurdles with a mark of 1:06.05.
"Brooke is really something special," said Utesch. "She stepped up to run the 100 today, which she's never done before, and did a great job."
Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler claimed first place in both the 1500 meter (4:51.31) and 5000 meter (18:41.34) runs. Senior Jessica Kendzor picked up a win in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:20.56. Junior Victoria Mullane (2:23.39) and freshman Amanda Ruschel (2:27.18) finished right behind Kendzor in second and third, respectively.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Kendzor, senior Danielle Albergo and freshmen Kaitlyn Ruffing and Lindsay Voltz beat out Lafayette's relay team with a time of 4:10.62.
Freshman Courtney Avery claimed the high jump title with a leap of 1.65m and was followed by sophomore Gabrielle Wardle in second with a mark of 1.60m. Junior Serenah Polite finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 11.21m.
On the men's side, senior Benjamin Beauchamp tossed the discus an IC4A qualifying and personal best 50.11m to win the event. Senior Patrick Ciez leaped 2.05m to win the high jump, while junior Adeolu Adesida finished second. Sophomore Beau Whitman pole vaulted 4.25m to win the event, while freshman Daniel Reichenbach jumped a personal best 14.21m to win the triple jump. Classmate Lucas Warning won the shot put with a new personal record heave of 15.46m. In the long jump, Lehigh took places two through four as freshman Daniel Boardman, junior Julian Copeland and Reichenbach all set new personal records.
"Our long and triple jump guys did a great job and they're all first-year jumpers for us, which is just phenomenal," said Utesch. "I was also impressed with Lucas Warning and we had a lot of guys step up in the field events."
Freshman Christopher Del Rossi impressed with a victory in the 400 meter dash after turning in a time of 51.20. Junior Christopher Watson ran 800 meters in 2:02.32 to claim the event victory. Senior Nicholas Molloy picked up a win in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:09.80 and was followed closely by classmate Kenneth Wilkinson in second with a mark of 4:09.91. Senior Simon Voorhees placed first in the 5000 meter run with a clip of 15:41.72.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Watson, Del Rossi, senior Martin Otieno and junior Justin Mahoney took first with a mark of 3:28.91.
"If you go to a gun fight, you can't leave the big guns in the holster," offered Utesch. "We left them in the holster by not running athletes like Tyler Mueller, Ryan Mahalsky and Jimmy Miller. We thought we had enough to not run those guys and we didn't."
The Mountain Hawks will send athletes to Moravian's Coach Pollard Invitational and Bucknell's Bison Classic next Friday and Saturday.
