Mountain Hawks welcome Army Saturday in Patriot League opener

4/3/2014 5:05:00 PM | Men's Tennis

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team opens up Patriot League play this weekend as the Mountain Hawks host Army on Saturday. After inclement weather forced the postponement of the Mountain Hawks' last two matches, Lehigh returns to action following a layoff of more than two weeks looking to get off on the right foot in its quest to repeat as Patriot League champions.

Inclement weather has kept Lehigh out of action the last two weekends as the Mountain Hawks' March 23 match at Saint Joseph's and March 30 original league opener at Loyola were both postponed. Lehigh enters its meeting with Army at 8-5 overall. The Mountain Hawks are poised to bounce back after a 5-2 defeat at the hands of non-league opponent Temple back on March 20.

Junior Ben Gilman was named Patriot League Player of the Month for March on Wednesday after going 4-1 in singles and 5-0 in doubles action last month. Gilman leads Lehigh with a 10-3 doubles mark, playing primarily at the No. 2 flight alongside sophomore Jeremy Kochman. His 4-1 singles month improved his season singles mark to 6-7 with time split between No. 1 and No. 2 singles. Kochman leads Lehigh statistically in singles with a 6-2 record. With Lehigh at full strength, Kochman will likely play No. 4 singles.

The Black Knights enter their meeting with Lehigh with at 13-4 overall,  winners of five straight, including three shutout victories over Patriot League opponents, Colgate,  Holy Cross and Lafayette.   In the last meeting between these two teams Army defeated the Mountain Hawks 5-2.  Lehigh won the most recent meeting in Bethlehem, a 5-2 victory in 2012. The Black Knights lead the all-time series 41-3 with Lehigh's other two victories coming in 1925 and 1986.

Saturday's match begins at 11 a.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center. Following Saturday's match, the Mountain Hawks travel to Philadelphia on Monday to play the rescheduled non-league match against Saint Joseph's at 3 p.m.
