BETHLEHEM, Pa.- In the final weekend before Patriot League Championships, the Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams will host the Lehigh Games Friday and Saturday on the Goodman Campus Track while also sending runners to the prestigious Penn Relays Thursday through Saturday at Penn's Franklin Field. More than 22,000 athletes from around the world will convene upon Philadelphia to compete in the event which has seen more competitors enter than any meet in the world at the 120th running of the Penn Relays.
Four new Lehigh records were set as 12 separate Mountain Hawks turned out ECAC/IC4A qualifying times last weekend. Senior Brooke Astor set a new school heptathlon record at the Mt. SAC Relays in California, one of the nation's most prestigious outdoor meets. Senior Tyler Mueller and sophomore Elizabeth Weiler each set new school records in the 5,000m run, while senior Danielle Albergo recorded her second-straight school record in the 400 meter dash. The three records, set at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invite, were all regional qualifying times.
Senior Jimmy Miller and junior Ryan Mahalsky qualified for IC4As in the 5,000m, as did the men's 4x100m relay team and junior Adeolu Adesida in the high jump. For the women, senior Jessica Kenzor qualified for ECACs in the 800 meter run, while freshman Courtney Avery (high jump), sophomore Gabrielle Wardle (javelin) and senior Jimil Ataman (hammer throw) also qualified.
The Mountain Hawks have been successful at both meets in the past. Last year, the Lehigh men won nine of 18 events at the Lehigh Games while also putting up impressive performances at the Penn Relays including a third-place finish from Mueller in the 5,000 meter run. The Lehigh women grabbed five first-place finishes at last year's Lehigh Games.
Following this weekend's last-chance qualifiers, Lehigh heads to the outdoor Patriot League Championships next weekend at Navy.
