BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After sweeping Holy Cross in a three-game series and clinching a spot in the Patriot League Tournament this past weekend, the Lehigh softball team will look to improve upon its five-game win streak with a non-league doubleheader against a strong Hofstra team Wednesday in Hempstead, N.Y. First pitch for game one is set for 4 p.m.
The Mountain Hawks are 24-15 overall and remain in first place in the Patriot League standings at 12-3 with three league games remaining. This weekend is Lehigh's off-weekend for Patriot League play, so Wednesday's doubleheader marks the first two of six non-league games on Lehigh's slate this week.
Junior Emily Bausher put forth a heroic effort from the circle over the weekend and earned all three wins for the Mountain Hawks against the Crusaders. The New Egypt, N.J. native pitched nine scoreless innings with 15 strikeouts in Saturday's doubleheader and added two scoreless frames with two strikeouts in Sunday's 8-2 victory. Bausher improved to 10-5 on the season and leads Lehigh with a team-best 84 strikeouts and 2.08 ERA. Her stellar performance this weekend was strong enough to earn Patriot League Pitcher of the Week honors for the second week in a row.
Sophomore Morgan Decker led Lehigh's offense throughout the series, going 5-for-9 with one home run, her seventh of the season, and one double. Decker leads the Mountain Hawks with a .402 season batting average off 41 hits and also has a team-high 35 RBI's. The Jamison, Pa. native was awarded Patriot League Player of the Week for the fourth time this season for her solid play this past week.
Freshman Vicky Lattanzio received an honorable mention for Patriot League Rookie of the Week after going 5-for-10 with six RBI's in the past week. She hit two bases-loaded doubles to come up with five runs batted in against the Crusaders.
Junior Emma Capetz had a strong game Sunday as she went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and belted her first home-run of the season. She is batting .351 off 27 hits with ten RBI's this season.
Perennial Colonial Athletic Association power Hofstra is enjoying another strong season at 26-11 overall. The Pride swept three games from Delaware last weekend to move to 8-4 in CAA play. Hofstra owns a .302 team batting average and has outscored its opponents 189-80. The Pride have won the last two CAA tournament titles and reached the NCAA Super Regional round in 2012.
Chloe Fitzgerald and Maggie Hawkins are Hofstra's top offensive producers. Fitzgerald has a.368 batting average and a team-high 46 hits while Hawkins is .328 with 39 hits and a team-high 34 RBI.
In the circle, Morgan Lashley improved to 14-4 on the season after shutting out Delaware in a 15-0 win Saturday. Lehigh knows Lashley well as she spent the last two years at Army, earning Patriot League Tournament MVP honors a year ago after defeating the Mountain Hawks twice to capture the title. Lashley has a 1.95 ERA and 123 strikeouts on the season. Taylor Pirone leads Hofstra with a 1.46 ERA and a 12-5 record.
After Wednesday's doubleheader, the Mountain Hawks will play another non-league doubleheader against Manhattan on Saturday in Riverdale, N.Y. before returning home to host Saint Francis (Pa.) on Sunday.
