BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a 4-0 week that saw the Lehigh softball team sweep a three-game series from Holy Cross and clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth, two Mountain Hawks garnered Patriot League weekly awards Monday. Sophomore Morgan Decker was named Player of the Week for the fourth time this season, while junior Emily Bausher earned Pitcher of the Week honors for the second straight week.
Decker led Lehigh with a .600 batting average in four games last week, hitting safely in all four games and going 6-for-10. She also drew three walks and was hit by a pitch twice to add to an impressive .733 on-base percentage. In Wednesday's 5-1 non-league win over Saint Joseph's, Decker clubbed a three-run home run in the fifth, which gave Lehigh a four-run cushion. Decker went 5-for-8 in the series with Holy Cross, highlighted by a 3-for-4 effort in Saturday's second game. In the fifth, Decker hit her seventh home run of the year, a solo shot, to pull the Mountain Hawks even at 3-3. Decker reached base in all five of her plate appearances in that game (double, single, home run, intentional walk, error) as the Mountain Hawks won 4-3 in nine innings.
For the season, Decker has raised her average to a team-best .402. She also leads the Mountain Hawks with ten doubles, seven home runs, 35 RBI, 26 walks and has been hit by a pitch nine times. Decker is hitting an even .500 (20-for-40) with three homers and 14 RBI in 15 Patriot League games.
Bausher proved invaluable for the Mountain Hawks in the three game sweep of the Crusaders, throwing 11 scoreless innings while earning the victory in all three Lehigh wins. In those 11 innings, Bausher allowed just two hits and struck out 17 batters while issuing no walks.
In her only start of the weekend, Bausher threw six innings of two-hit shutout ball with eight strikeouts, before giving way to senior Ashley Quigley on senior day in a 6-0 win. Bausher came on in relief with runners on second and third and no outs in the seventh inning of Saturday's second game and kept the Crusaders off the board. Her appearance began with a pop up for the first out. Bausher struck out the next batter she faced, but a wild pitch allowed the batter to reach first and load the bases. She then proceeded to strike out the final two batters of the inning to end the threat. Bausher had a streak of seven consecutive batters struck out as she fanned seven of the ten she faced in the appearance.
In Sunday's series finale, Bausher came on with a runner on first and nobody out in the third inning and retired all six batters she faced, including a pair of strikeouts as Lehigh rallied from 2-0 down to win 8-2. Bausher now leads Lehigh with a 10-5 record, 2.08 ERA and 84 strikeouts. She has been close to unhittable in league games with a 7-0 record and 0.38 ERA.
Also Monday, freshman Vicky Lattanzio received an honorable mention from the league. Lattanzio went 5-for-10 last week with a team-leading six runs batted in. She came up with two bases-loaded doubles in three games against the Crusaders, driving in five runs in the process.
The Mountain Hawks (24-15, 12-3 Patriot League) will begin a week featuring six non-league games with a Wednesday doubleheader at Hofstra. First pitch for game one is set for 4 p.m. with streaming audio at Lehighsports.com.
