BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Winners of their last ten games, the Lehigh softball team improved to 6-0 in the Patriot League and 14-10 overall following a three-game weekend sweep of rival Lafayette. On the heels of their second straight 3-0 league weekend two Mountain Hawks claimed Patriot League weekly softball awards Tuesday as sophomore Morgan Decker was named Player of the Week and senior Ashley Quigley earned Pitcher of the Week honors.
Decker continued her torrid pace en route to her second straight Player of the Week honor and her third this season. In three games against Lafayette Decker was 5-for-6 at the plate with four extra base hits and four RBI. She also drew four walks, giving the Jamison, Pa., native a .900 on-base percentage to go along with her .833 batting average for the week.
In Saturday's series opener, Decker gave Lehigh a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning with a two-run home run to right center, her team leading fourth of the season. Decker had an RBI single in the first game of Monday's doubleheader and went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple, a RBI and two runs scored in the series finale, which Lehigh won 9-1 in six innings.
In six Patriot League games over the last two weeks, Decker is batting .800 (12-for-15), with seven runs scored, three doubles, a triple, two home runs and 12 runs batted in. She has upped her overall season average to .448 and has already driven in 25 runs in 24 games for the Mountain Hawks.
Quigley rode a career-best strikeout game to her first career weekly award. In the first game of Monday's doubleheader sweep, Quigley allowed one run on three hits in seven innings while striking out 12 Leopards as Lehigh won 4-1. Quigley struck out the first eight batters she faced and completed the rare occurrence of striking out four batters in an inning when she fanned four in the second, only to have the second batter reach on a passed ball.
The 12 strikeouts bested Quigley's previous career high of 11 set against Manhattan in 2012. Quigley's 12 strikeouts are also the most for a Lehigh hurler in a game this season. The Arizona native is 3-0 in league play with 18 strikeouts in 16 innings and leads the Mountain Hawks with 41 strikeouts overall to go along with her 5-2 record.
Freshman Christine Campbell also received an honorable mention Tuesday after posting a pair of wins versus the Leopards. Campbell fired a complete-game two-hit shutout on Saturday and limited the Leopards to a run on five hits in six innings in Monday's series finale. She leads Lehigh with six victories and a 1.68 ERA this season.
The Mountain Hawks will put their ten game winning streak on the line Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Lawrenceville, N.J. for a doubleheader against Rider. The Broncs bring a 2-15 record into a Tuesday doubleheader with Princeton. Rider has lost its last 11 games following an 8-7 win against North Carolina A&T in the Aggie Invitational back on February 23. Amanda Irving has been Rider's top hitter with a .333 average, one home run and seven RBI. Five pitchers have seen time in the pitcher's circle with Kaitlyn Kallert having thrown the most innings (38.1). Kallert is 1-5 with a 5.84 ERA.
Last year Lehigh won a single game against Rider by a 6-3 score at Kaufman Field.
Wednesday's doubleheader gets underway at 3 p.m. from Rider's Herb and Joan Young Field. Lehigh will return to Patriot League play with three games this weekend at Patriot League newcomer Boston University.
