LOS ANGELES – The Lehigh bats came alive at Smith Field Friday as the Mountain Hawks swept a pair of games on day two of the LMU Invitational I. After being limited to a total of three runs on ten hits in one run losses to Saint Mary's and Loyola Marymount on Thursday, the Mountain Hawks bounced back, tallying nine runs on 21 in two victories: a 5-2 win over Brown and a 4-2 win over Saint Mary's.
Junior Emily Bausher pitched Lehigh to a game one win over the Bears while adding a pair of solo home runs. Sophomore Morgan Decker drove in three runs in the rematch with the Gaels as Lehigh won back-to-back games for the first time in 2014. The Mountain Hawks are now 4-9 on the season with one game remaining on their California trip.
Bausher allowed two runs on three hits over six innings to earn her first victory of the season but did more damage to the Bears (2-4) with the bat. She opened the scoring for Lehigh with a solo home run to left center and then added another solo shot to left in the fifth to cap Lehigh's scoring. The home runs are the second and third of Bausher's career and the first since 2012. Bausher is the first Lehigh player to hit two home runs in a game since Decker accomplished the feat at Princeton last year.
Lehigh also scored three runs with two outs in the fourth inning on a bases-loaded two-run single to left by sophomore MacKenzie Velasquez, and a single to center by sophomore Alexis Watanabe. Watanabe and Bausher combined for three hits apiece against Brown.
Brown scored its two runs on a two-run single by Christina Andrews in the sixth. Leah Nakashima took the loss for the Bears, allowing four runs on nine hits in four innings.
Senior Ashley Quigley pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out Lehigh's first game of the day.
In game two Lehigh avenged a loss to the Gaels Thursday behind the hitting of Waggy and Decker and strong pitching from freshman Christine Campbell, who limited the Gaels to two runs on six hits in a complete game effort as she improves to 2-3 on the season.
Waggy gave Lehigh the early lead with a solo home run to left in the second inning, her first of the season and the fourth of her career.
Decker extended Lehigh's lead with a two-run double to left center in the third that scored Velasquez and Watanabe. Monika Reichhard put the Gaels on the board with an RBI single in the fourth but Decker responded with a single through the right side in the bottom of the frame that scored senior Lizzy Odren.
Saint Mary's scored a run in the fifth to pull within two runs but Campbell worked around a one out single in the sixth and retired the Gaels in order in the seventh to close the door.
Watanabe added two hits against Saint Mary's to finish with five for the day.
The Mountain Hawks will close out their spring break trip to California with a single game Saturday against Saint Mary's, with first pitch set for 9 a.m. PT.
