Lehigh falls 1-0 to Saint Mary’s in final spring break game

3/8/2014 2:52:00 PM | Softball

LOS ANGELES – The Lehigh softball team came out on the short end of a pitchers' dual in the Mountain Hawks' final game of their California spring break trip as Lehigh fell 1-0 to Saint Mary's Saturday. The Gaels' Lujane Mussadi pitched a four-hit shutout to send the Mountain Hawks home with a 4-10 overall record while Saint Mary's improves to 9-12.

The teams combined for just two hits through the first three innings before Lehigh starter Ashley Quigley worked her way out of a two-on, two-out jam in the fourth following a Saint Mary's ground-out to keep the contest scoreless. Lehigh sophomore Alexis Wantanabe got Lehigh's first hit of the game in the fourth inning on a single up the middle, but a fielder's choice and strikeout followed to end the inning.

The Gaels Sarah Lira singled to shortstop with one out in the sixth inning before Lahela Usui was brought on to pinch run for the designated hitter. Usui stole second before Andrea Hazel singled up the middle to drive home the game's lone run.

Back-to-back singles from freshman Ashley Cole and junior Emma Capetz led off the bottom half of the sixth inning, but Mussadi worked her way out of the jam as the Gaels captured the 1-0 victory.

Quigley suffered the loss after pitching all seven innings and allowing one run on five hits.

The Mountain Hawks head to Delaware State next weekend for a pair of doubleheaders. Lehigh makes its home debut with a twinbill against Penn on March 19.
