Lehigh takes two on day one of Hornet Invitational in Delaware

DOVER, Del. – Lehigh opened up action at the Hornet Invitational with a pair of victories Saturday at Wesley College. The Mountain Hawks began the day with a 9-1 win over Hartford in five innings and then held off a late Hornet charge to defeat Delaware State 1-0.
With the two wins, Lehigh improves to 6-10 on the season.
In its first game of the day, Lehigh scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back in a game that ended after five innings due to the eight run rule. Sophomore Alexis Watanabe led Lehigh going 3-for-3 with two runs scored while junior Emma Capetz added two hits in the opener as the Mountain Hawks finished game one with eight hits, while limiting Hartford (2-8) to just two.
Three consecutive singles from MacKenzie Velasquez, Watanabe and Morgan Decker to open the bottom of the first loaded the bases for the Mountain Hawks. Hartford starter Zuzana Kuder then hit the next two batters, juniors Emily Bausher and Cassie Waggy bringing in two runs to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead. Sophomore Jessica Calvini brought Lehigh's third run home with a sacrifice fly to left. The Hawks nearly got out of the inning without any further damage, an error by shortstop Mackenzie Obert on a ball hit by freshman Ashley Cole allowed two more runs to score.
In the second, Watanabe led off with a triple and stole home to extend Lehigh's lead to 6-0. The lead grew to 8-0 in the top of the third as Kuder walked sophomore Carissa Zito and Cole to begin the frame. A double steal moved runners to second and third and Velasquez brought Zito home with an RBI ground out to shortstop. Watanabe followed with a double to center, scoring Cole with Lehigh's eighth run.
Hartford scored its run in the top of the fourth as Sawyer Fried stole home, but Lehigh answered with a run in the bottom of the frame on a one-out RBI double to center by Capetz. Bausher worked around a two-out walk in the fifth to close out Lehigh's first run rule win of the season.
Bausher picked up her second victory of the season, allowing a run on two hits in five innings. She struck out two and walked three to improve to 2-5 on the year.
Kuder allowed nine runs (six earned) on eight hits in four innings. She struck out one but walked four and hit three Mountain Hawk batters.
In its second game of the day, Lehigh managed just three hits but a strong pitching effort from freshman Christine Campbell resulted in a six-hit shutout, her second of the season. Campbell struck out five and walked one to improve to 3-3 on the season.
Lehigh scored the only run of the game in the top of the fifth as freshman Vicky Lattanzio was hit by pitch to lead off the inning. Calvini sacrificed pinch runner Lizzy Odren to second and after a lineout, Capetz singled through the right side to bring Odren home and give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Campbell dealt with multiple base runners in each of the first three innings but kept the Hornets (7-5) at bay. In the seventh, Delaware State loaded the bases with two outs but Campbell got Jordan Stamps to line out to Capetz at shortstop to end the game.
Tara Tursellino came on in relief in the third inning and took the loss allowing one run and all three Lehigh hits.
The Mountain Hawks will conclude action at the Hornet Invitational with games against Hartford and Delaware State Sunday as action moves to Dover High School. First pitch for the Lehigh-Hartford game is set for 11 a.m. while the Mountain Hawks will close out the weekend against DSU at 3:30 p.m.
