Mountain Hawks head to ECAC/IC4A Championships this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Eight women and 14 men will represent the Lehigh track and field teams at the ECAC/IC4A Championships this weekend at Boston University. The select athletes qualified for the meet based on predetermined standards and will be competing against the best of the best from Division I schools in the northeast in the three-day competition that begins Friday. The meet will provide an opportunity for the Mountain Hawks to close out the indoor season on a high note while hoping to finish in the top eight of their events and be named All-East.
Two weeks have passed since the Mountain Hawks last competed at the Patriot League Championships in Bucknell's Gerhard Field House. The women captured their best finish in program history as six individual event titles helped the Mountain Hawks claim second place. The men grabbed three event wins to finish fifth.
Senior Brooke Astor, who was named the Patriot League Field Athlete of the Meet two weeks ago after winning two events, will represent the Mountain Hawks in both the pentathlon and 60 meter hurdles. Astor claimed her third-straight pentathlon title at the league championship meet and set a new meet record in the 60m hurdles.
Freshman Courtney Avery looks to continue her impressive rookie campaign in the high jump this weekend. Avery holds the Lehigh school record in the event with a mark of 1.75m. She was named the Patriot League Rookie of the Meet after setting a new meet record with her impressive leap.
Junior Ingrid Simon will compete in the 1000 meter race after qualifying with a time of 2:55.15. Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler is slated to represent Lehigh in the 5000 meter race after finishing third in the event at the Patriot League Championships. Simon will join junior Victoria Mullane and freshmen Marissa Karl and Amanda Ruschel in the 4x800 meter relay, as well.
Seniors Tyler Mueller and Jimmy Miller will represent the men in the 3000 meter race at IC4A Championships. Mueller won the race at Patriot League Championships with a new personal-best time of 8:17.75, while also becoming Lehigh's first-ever 5000 meter champion. Miller finished just six seconds behind Mueller to place ninth. Junior Ryan Mahalsky will run the 5000 meter race after claiming runner-up status in the event at the league championship meet.
Junior Adeolu Adesida will represent the Mountain Hawks in the high jump after winning the event at Patriot League Championships. Adesida holds the Lehigh record in the event with a 2.18 meter leap that currently ranks 23rd-best in Division I. He will be joined by senior Patrick Ciez who finished in third place at Patriot League Championships. Junior Derek Gaul will compete in the long jump after leaping a personal best 7.14m to claim second place at Patriot League Championships.
Senior Martin Otieno will have a busy weekend as he competes in the 60 meter dash, 200 meter dash and 4x400 meter relay. Otieno finished third in the 60m and second in the 200m at Patriot League Championships. He will be joined by juniors Justin Mahoney and Chirstopher Watson, as well as freshman Christopher Del Rossi, in the 4x400 meter relay. The team of seniors John Ciavardelli and Nicholas Molloy and juniors Mitchell Biler and Simon Voorhees with represent Lehigh in the 4x800 meter relay.
Lehigh will have two weeks off from competition before opening the outdoor season at the Philadelphia Classic on March 22.
