SAN DIEGO – The Lehigh softball team finished up its stretch of games in the San Diego area by splitting a doubleheader with the University of San Diego Tuesday at the USD Softball Complex. The Mountain Hawks suffered a tough 2-1 setback in the opener before senior Ashley Quigley fired a two-hit shutout to lead Lehigh to a 2-0 win in the nightcap.
Following Tuesday's split, Lehigh stands at 2-6 on the young season, while San Diego is 4-9.
Quigley (1-1) fired her fifth career shutout as she allowed just three hits in seven innings with five strikeouts and zero walks. The senior right-hander did not allow a hit after the second inning and retired 17 of the last 18 batters she faced.
The Mountain Hawks managed just three hits themselves in Tuesday's nightcap but capitalized on the wildness of Torero starter Cassidy Coleman who struck out seven but issued three walks and hit two batters.
Coleman held Lehigh hitless through the first three innings before issuing back-to-back walks to freshman Vicky Lattanzio and junior Cassie Waggy to open the fourth. Sophomore Jessica Calvini got Lehigh on the board with a single up the middle that scored Lattanzio, and classmate Carissa Zito followed with a single to right that scored Waggy to plate the only two runs Quigley needed.
Sophomore Morgan Decker notched Lehigh's third hit, a leadoff single in the fifth but pinch runner Lizzy Odren was erased on a double play.
In Tuesday's first game, Lehigh out-hit San Diego 6-5 but the Mountain Hawks were unable to overcome single Torero runs scored in the third and fifth innings.
San Diego used a two out rally to plate the game's first run in the third inning. Dana Prelsnik reached on an infield single and stole second before scoring on a single down the left field line by Tatum Schultz.
USD added a second run in the fifth on a leadoff double by Olivia Sandusky and a one-out RBI double by Danielle Mavridis.
In the top of the sixth it was Lehigh's turn for a two out rally as sophomore Alexis Watanabe dropped down a bunt single to third base and then came around to score on a double to left center by Decker.
Lehigh threatened in the seventh as Waggy led off with a single to left and junior Emily Bausher reached on an infield single, but with the tying and go-ahead runs aboard but Torero hurler Jenny Lahitte struck out Zito and Odren to end the game.
Lahitte finished with nine strikeouts for USD as she allowed a run on six hits to improve to 3-4 on the season. Bausher pitched well for Lehigh, allowing two runs on four hits in six innings while striking out four and walking one, but she took the loss, falling to 0-4 in 2014.
Watanabe recorded two of Lehigh's six hits in the opener and scored the Mountain Hawks' only run. She has now scored four of the seven runs plated by Lehigh in California.
Next up for the Mountain Hawks is a trip to Long Beach State for a single game against the 49ers Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. from the 49er Softball Complex.
