No. 58 Penn State hands Lehigh first loss of season, 7-0

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – The Lehigh men's tennis team nearly didn't make the trip to Penn State due to the threat of inclement weather, but the Mountain Hawks made their way to Penn State and suffered their first loss of the year, 7-0 to the 58th-ranked Nittany Lions Sunday inside the Indoor Tennis Center. The Nittany Lions swept all three doubles matches and won all six singles matches in straight sets to improve to 8-0 while Lehigh falls to 4-1.
Doubles play began with Penn State's No. 2 team of Russell Bader and Michael Reilly winning 8-5 over junior Ben Gilman and sophomore Jeremy Kochman. The Nittany Lions clinched the first point of the match at No. 3 doubles as Chris Young and Ramy Labna won 8-1 over senior Timur Chernykh and freshman Tyler Hansen. Lehigh's top team of senior Mark Goldberg and junior Mitchell Petersen also fell by an 8-5 score.
Penn State extended its lead in singles play as Petersen won just three games against Bader at the No. 2 flight and Chernykh won just two against Roman Trkulja at the No. 4 flight. The Nittany Lions clinched the match at No. 3 singles as Alex Fennell won 6-1, 6-4 over Hansen. Gilman and freshman Ethan Bogard had the best showings for Lehigh as both Mountain Hawks won six games in 6-3, 6-3 losses. Gilman fell to Leonard Stakhovsky at the top flight while Bogard lost to Marc Collado Castells at the No. 5 flight.
Lehigh will look to get back on the winning track next Sunday when the Mountain Hawks host Mount St. Mary's at 2 p.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
