LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh men's and women's track and field teams both sit in first place of the Patriot League Championships heading into the final day of competition Sunday at Bucknell's Gerhard Field House. A total of four Lehigh champions were crowned during Saturday's competition as the men enter day two with 60.5 team points and the women with 66.
"I am extremely happy with where we're sitting and I can't tell you how proud I am of these teams," said head coach Matt Utesch. "We're set up great and we've got all the people in all the right places. We've been in first place heading into the final day of competition before, but the difference is this team has the right people in the right events and can really make a run for a title."
The Lehigh women lead second-place Boston University by 24 points. Navy sits in third with 37 points, while Bucknell (25) and Army (18) round out the top five. Freshman Courtney Avery and Lehigh's 4x800m relay team each secured victories as two Mountain Hawks set new meet records.
Avery became the first female Mountain Hawk to win the high jump since K.T. Hessler in 2005 while also setting a new meet record. Avery's 1.75m leap tied her own school record and was 0.15m higher than the second-place finisher from Navy.
The 4x800 meter relay team of Jessica Kendzor, Ingrid Simon, Victoria Mullane and Amanda Ruschel finished the race in an ECAC qualifying time of 9:04.28 to narrowly edge out Bucknell's team. The win gave Lehigh a crucial 10 team points.
After securing her third consecutive pentathlon title on the first day of competition, senior Brooke Astor continued to make her mark with a first-place finish in the 60 meter hurdles preliminaries. Astor's time of 8.61 broke a six-year Patriot League Championship record. She followed with a first-place finish in the event's semifinals to advance to Sunday's event final. Freshman Katie Hatler will also join Astor in the event finals on Sunday after placing seventh in the semis with a mark of 9.06.
Astor then finished sixth in the 60 meter dash prelims (7.85) and semis (7.83) to advance to Sunday's event finals. The Milltown, N.J. native capped off her day with a second-place finish in the long jump. Her leap of 5.57m was just 0.01m off her previous personal best.
Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler placed third in the 5000 meter run with a new personal-best time of 17:23.07
Senior Jimil Ataman placed fifth in the 20 lb. weight throw with an ECAC qualifying launch of 16.35m. Classmate Katie Baglio finished seventh in the event with a 14.64m throw as the two women combined to give Lehigh six team points.
The Lehigh men hold a 15-point lead on Navy who is currently in second place with 45.83 points. League newcomer Boston University sits in third (38) while Bucknell (35) and Army (31.33) round out the top five. Two Lehigh champions were crowned as the Mountain Hawks in the 5000 meter run and high jump combined to secure 43.5 of Lehigh's points.
"Our sweep of the 5000m gave us 24 points, which is absolutely unheard of," said Utesch. "Our three high jump guys gave us 19.5 points which is amazing. We're set up great for tomorrow and we've got all the people in all the right places."
