BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team completed its third consecutive home meet on Saturday afternoon in the 22nd Annual John Covert Classic inside Rauch Fieldhouse. Seven Mountain Hawks earned first-place finishes in the unscored meet against Towson, Delaware, Gettysburg, Moravian, Muhlenberg, Salisbury and Stockton.
"The distance guys did a really nice job, as I'm pleased with how the freshman and younger guys are coming along," said head coach Matt Utesch. "Coming off the dual meet, it's always difficult to regain intensity. We had a lot of new personal records today, which shows they were able to keep the intensity going and that's going to translate into better and better results as we near Patriot League Championships."
Junior Derek Gaul was victorious in the long jump with his leap of 6.99m. Gaul was also Lehigh's top finisher in the 60 meter dash, sprinting to the finish line in a new personal-best time of 7.11 seconds that earned second place.
The Mountain Hawks swept the top five spots in the 5000 meter run, with junior Daniel Reilly claiming the victory with a time of 15:14.50. Senior Nick Molloy set a new personal best and finished first in the mile run, crossing the line in 4:21.07 to claim his first collegiate win. Freshman Jack Curran earned second place in the 3000 meter run with his personal-best mark of 9:00.18, while freshman Kyle Leonard also set a new personal record (9:02.42) with his fourth place finish.
Senior Benjamin Beauchamp impressed in the weight throw with his toss of 15.20m that earned him first place. Junior Adeolu Adesida and senior Patrick Ciez took first and second places in the high jump with their respective marks of 2.10m and 2.00m. John Tyler placed second in the pole vault with a mark of 4.28m. Lehigh swept second through fifth place in the triple jump, led by freshman Daniel Reichenbach in second place with a new personal best time of 13.69m. Freshman Lucas Warning led the way in shot put, finishing fourth with a throw of 13.97m.
Freshman James Clements earned his first collegiate victory in the 500 meter run with a mark of 1:08.37. Clements was followed by junior Sebastian Nicewicz in second place (1:10.47). Freshman Seamus Cullinane picked up his first career win in the 1000 meter run with a new personal-best time of 2:37.58. Senior Martin Otieno was Lehigh's highest finisher in the 400 meter dash, finishing second with a time of 50.98. Junior Justin Mahoney sprinted 200 meters in 23.31 to earn second place.
The team of Nicewicz, John Ciavardelli, Tom Troxell and Robert Iulo finished third in the 4x400 meter relay with a time of 3:32.37.
The Mountain Hawks will now have two more chances to tune-up before the indoor Patriot League Championships on Feb. 21-23. Lehigh will send runners to the Armory Collegiate Invitational next weekend and the Bucknell Tune-Up the following Saturday.
