BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team looks to finish the regular season strong when the Mountain Hawks travel to Holy Cross on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks, who have already clinched a berth in the Patriot League Tournament, have an opportunity to secure home-field advantage in Tuesday's Patriot League quarterfinals with a win Saturday against the Crusaders. The contest is slated for a 5 p.m. start and can be viewed for free on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks (9-7-1, 4-3-1 Patriot League) are tied with Bucknell for fourth place in the Patriot League and trail third place American by one point. Army sits in sixth place with 11 points. Top-seeded Boston University and second-place Navy have already secured a bye into the semifinals. The third and fourth seeds will host quarterfinal matches Tuesday with the winners advancing to Friday's semifinals.
Lehigh is coming off a big 3-1 victory at Colgate last Saturday. It was Lehigh's first win in Hamilton since October 21, 2006 and the victory, coupled with other results from around the league, clinched Lehigh's first spot in the Patriot League Tournament since 2011. Juniors Jamie Luchini, Austin Decker and Ryan Bertrando scored Lehigh's goals, while senior keeper Ciaran Nugent recorded another strong performance between the posts. The win extended the Mountain Hawks' unbeaten streak to four games.
Luchini anchors Lehigh's attack and has compiled a total of 19 points, which ranks fourth in the Patriot League. Luchini has netted six goals to go along with a league-leading seven assists. Freshman Doyle Tuvesson follows with four goals and three assists, good for 11 points. Nugent has been strong in goal and has accumulated 57 saves to go along with a .750 save percentage and 1.23 GAA.
The Crusaders carry a 5-8-3 overall mark and 2-5-1 league record into Saturday's game. Holy Cross has already been eliminated from playoff contention but will look to finish the season strong at home.
The Crusaders haven't landed in the win column since a 3-2 double-overtime win at Lafayette on Oct. 11. Holy Cross' only other league win came over Loyola (2-0) on Sept. 27. Joey DeVivo leads the Crusaders offensively with 15 points behind seven goals and one assist, while two others follow with nine points. Keeper Kevin Wright has spent all but seven minutes in goal this season and has tallied a league-leading 76 saves. Wright holds a .738 save percentage and 1.60 GAA.
The Mountain Hawks have won four of the last five contests against Holy Cross and lead the all-time series 11-9-6.
Lehigh will begin its quest for a Patriot League championship Tuesday in the quarterfinal round of the league tournament. The location of the game depends on Saturday's results around the league.
