La Salle scores three late goals to shock Lehigh, 3-2

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team controlled play for most of the game, but La Salle scored three goals in the game's final 5:50 to shock the Mountain Hawks 3-2 on Senior Day Sunday. Sophomore Marissa Glatt and senior Natalie Tacka scored Lehigh's goals and the Mountain Hawks held a 17-13 edge in shots for the game, but couldn't overcome the late La Salle flurry.
Â
Seniors Tacka, Steph Fratoni and Abby Sprinkel were recognized prior to the game for their contributions in the brown and white.
Â
"I thought the seniors were excellent today," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "They gave all they had. Nat had a goal and Steph came up with some big defensive plays."
Lehigh came out of the game with a quick goal, making it 1-0 just 43 seconds into the game. Sophomore Marissa Glatt scored her second goal in as many games, taking a feed from classmate Gabby Tofig and beating La Salle Rachel Hartman inside the right post.
Â
The Mountain Hawks carried the momentum and made it 2-0 at the 23:56 mark. Off a penalty corner, junior Lindsey Schott found Glatt, who fired the ball towards the cage where Tacka made a deflection past Hartman for the 2-0 advantage.
Â
Lehigh continued to fire shots into the second half, finishing with 11 shots on goal for the game. The Mountain Hawks were limiting the Explorers' scoring chances and appeared firmly in control until the 64:10 mark when Devin Muracco took a feed in the circle and beat Lehigh sophomore goalie Julia Ward to cut Lehigh's lead in half. Muracco tied the score 4:30 later off a free hit, making a move forward into the circle and firing a hard shot past Ward to make it 2-2.
Â
Less than a minute after the tying score, Kendall Kreider gave La Salle the lead with just 25 seconds remaining. On a flurry of chances, Ward made a pair of saves, but couldn't stop the third. Colleen Kempf made a quick feed, to Kreider who made it 3-2 Explorers, which proved to be the final.
Â
Final shots were 17-13 in favor of Lehigh while La Salle held a 6-5 edge in penalty corners. Hartman made eight saves, to go with a La Salle defensive stop, while Ward posted four.
Â
With the end of Sunday's game came the end of the season and the careers of Fratoni, Tacka and Sprinkel. The Mountain Hawks finished the season 4-14, highlighted by a 4-1 stretch at the end of September which featured wins over Towson, Georgetown, Holy Cross and Sacred Heart. Tofig finished the season with eight goals, among the Patriot League's leaders. The team's five leading scorers all return next season, as well as Ward in goal.
