BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team controlled play for much of the game, but Bucknell scored its four goals in the span of 25:05 in the second half to down the Mountain Hawks 4-1 on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Marissa Glatt gave Lehigh a lead it wouldn't relinquish until the 44th minute. The Mountain Hawks created strong pressure throughout the game, finishing with a 7-4 edge in penalty corners, but couldn't snap Bucknell's perfect Patriot League season as the Bison improve to 6-0 in league play.
Â
"I thought our effort was amazing for the entire game," said Lehigh head coach Stacey Eversley. "I thought we controlled most of the game. They were able to capitalize on the opportunities they had."
Â
Lehigh tallied the game's first shot just 1:16 into the game as a Gabby Tofig chance was saved by Shannon Keen while freshman Jackie Renda's rebound went wide. Less than two minutes later, the Mountain Hawks generated the game's first penalty corner which resulted in an Erin Ricker shot which was blocked.
Â
Sophomore Julia Ward made her first save of the afternoon on a Stephanie Dressler shot at the 12:06 mark. The next shot on goal for either side found the back of the net as Glatt made a run down the right side and put a ball towards goal which beat Bucknell goalie Shannon Keen to make it 1-0 at the 21:24 mark.
Â
The Mountain Hawks held that lead until eight minutes into the second half. Lehigh came out of halftime with the first four shots and two penalty corners, but the Bison turned their first second-half shot into the game-tying goal at 43:15.
Â
Bucknell made it 2-0 just over four minutes later as Kiersten Sydnor tipped in a feed from Abby Watson to make it 2-1. The Bison added two more goals, at 62:58 and 68:20 while Lehigh continued to generate opportunities, but couldn't pull closer.
Â
Final shots were 15-12 in favor of the Bison while Lehigh held a 7-4 edge in penalty corners. Ward finished with five saves while Keen made five.
Â
"We worked really hard on our press today, so we were able to intercept some balls and go on attack," said Eversley. "In the first half, we worked as a unit for the whole 35 minutes, which was great, and we capitalized and scored early. I think we're on the right track."
Â
The Mountain Hawks wrap up their season in less than 24 hours when they host La Salle on Sunday at 1 p.m. It's Senior Day as Steph Fratoni, Natalie Tacka and Abby Sprinkel will be recognized prior to the game.
Â
"We obviously wanted to win today, but we want to win tomorrow for the seniors," said Eversley. "We're always going out there trying to get the win. We always want to end the season with a win. Not every team can go to postseason play, but you can end with a win. That's what we're looking to do tomorrow."
