Mountain Hawks drop 2-1 heartbreaker in double overtime at Loyola

10/18/2014 7:51:00 PM | Men's Soccer

BALTIMORE – The Lehigh men's soccer team played Loyola to a 1-1 draw through 106 minutes until a Greyhound header propelled Loyola to a 2-1 double-overtime victory Saturday evening at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The Mountain Hawks fall to 6-7 overall and 2-3 in the Patriot League while Loyola improves to 5-6-2 overall and 2-3 in league play.

"This was a heartbreaking loss for us," said head coach Dean Koski. "We did well to get back into the game and we had our foot on the pedal in the right way for much of the game. We'll have to take a good hard look at who we are and where we want to be, and my hope is that the guys will regroup and be ready for the upcoming games."

Lehigh tallied the first three shots of the game, but the Greyhounds capitalized on their first attempt of the contest in the 24th minute when Connor Thompson connected on a pass from Dylan Engel to send the ball into the lower left-hand corner of the net and put Loyola ahead 1-0.

Senior keeper Ciaran Nugent made his first save of the game in the 30th minute. The Mountain Hawks began to pick up offensive momentum in the final ten minutes of the half, tallying three shots and two corner kicks, but the Loyola defense stayed strong as the Greyhounds took a 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Loyola keeper Matt Sanchez was able to stop Lehigh's first shot of the second half in the 51st minute, but the Mountain Hawks were able to find an equalizer two minutes later. Freshman Doyle Tuvesson fired a shot that was blocked by the Greyhound defense, but senior Ali Famili sent the rebound into the lower left-hand corner of the net 52:05 into the match to tie the score at one.

Nugent thwarted a good Loyola chance in the 70th minute when he stopped a point-blank shot from the Greyhounds' Antony Sare. Just a minute later, a free kick off the foot of junior Jamie Luchini led to a strong chance for freshman Jack Miskel, but Sanchez was able to get his fingertips on the ball and send it out of play. Nugent made another strong save in the 87th minute before regulation expired and the game was sent to overtime at a 1-1 tie.

Lehigh controlled possession for much of the first overtime period, but the Loyola defense stood tall. With just five seconds left in the opening OT, an offside flag called back a would-be golden goal from junior Brian Vail as the contest was sent into double overtime still tied at one.

Halfway through the second overtime, a strong shot from Luchini missed being a game-winner by just a few inches as it ricocheted off the near post.  Lehigh once again controlled offensive momentum for much of the final OT period before Loyola's Joey Cahalan sent a beautiful header right past Nugent's fingertips in the 107th minute to send Loyola home with the 2-1 overtime win.

Lehigh held a 14-9 shot advantage and 7-2 corner kick edge. Luchini led the Mountain Hawks with five shot attempts. Nugent made three saves while Sanchez recorded five.

The Mountain Hawks return to the Ulrich Sports Complex Tuesday at 7 p.m. to host Fairleigh Dickinson in the final non-league game of the season. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
