BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After nearly six weeks away from competition, the Lehigh swimming and diving teams return to action Friday against Patriot League rival Army. The Mountain Hawks will swim against the Black Knights at Crandall Pool, beginning at 5 p.m. kicking off a three-weekend stretch of meets against Patriot League opponents.
Lehigh's full squad has not competed since sweeping rival Lafayette for the sixth straight year back on November 22. The Mountain Hawk men posted a 196-92 win, their 23rd straight over the Leopards, to move to 4-2 on the season. Lehigh's women are off to a 5-0 start after defeating Lafayette 177-111.
The Mountain Hawks enjoyed a record-setting performance against the Leopards as one school record and seven Jacobs Pool marks were established. Freshman Cora Summerfield set a school record in the 1000 yard freestyle while sophomores Carolyn Koch and Courtney Patterson totaled three pool records, with Koch establishing marks in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events and Patterson setting a pool record in the 200 yard individual medley. The women's 400 yard medley relay and 200 yard free relay teams also set pool records.
Junior Danny Bennett set the only men's individual pool record against Lafayette with a time of 4:34.95 in the 500 free. Lehigh's men's 400 medley relay team also set a pool record.
Koch and senior Chris Hoke were the last Mountain Hawks to race competitively as they both swam at the USA Swimming AT&T Winter Nationals last month in Knoxville, Tenn.
Army returns to action for the first time since getting swept at rival Navy on December 12. The Black Knight men are 2-3 on the season while the women are 1-3.
Last year the Mountain Hawks were swept by the Black Knights at Jacobs Pool. Lehigh's men have never beaten Army (0-42 all-time), while the women are now 5-14 versus the Black Knights.
Following Friday's meet, Lehigh will host home meets the next two weekends at Jacobs Pool as the Mountain Hawks will welcome Loyola on January 18 and Bucknell on January 25.
Friday's meet gets underway at 5 p.m. from Army's Crandall Pool.
