Army women hand Lehigh first loss of 2013-14 season

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Despite a strong overall effort, the Lehigh women's swimming and diving team suffered their first loss of the season as the Mountain Hawks dropped a 181-113 decision to Army Friday at Crandall Pool. The Mountain Hawks won six of 16 events, with sophomore Carolyn Koch winning two individual events for Lehigh, which falls to 5-1 on the season.
 
Three of Lehigh's six victories came in the sprint freestyle events, with Koch winning the 100 and 200 yard events. Koch first won the 200 with a time of 1:54.28 with freshman Kelly Carroll finishing second, and later won the 100 in 53.20 with freshman Kaitlyn Ruffing finishing just .14 seconds behind. Ruffing gave Lehigh a sweep of the sprints, winning the 50 yard freestyle in 24.19 seconds.
 
Junior Alissa Leung won the 200 yard backstroke in 2:05.78 and narrowly missed the backstroke double, finishing second by just .12 in the 100. Classmate Kimberly Weyand posted a win in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:08.10. Lehigh's sixth and final win of the meet came in the 500 free with sophomore Courtney Patterson winning with a time of 5:07.76 and sophomore Cora Summerfield finishing second.
 
The Mountain Hawks will look to rebound when they return to Jacobs Pool on Saturday January 18 to face Patriot League newcomer Loyola at 1 p.m.
